Venice Penguin Swim Club Annual Swim
There is no official event for New Year's 2023.
Brave souls take an annual New Year's Day dip at the Venice Beach breakwater. Although Southern California Aquatics is not sponsoring its 61st annual Penguin Swim event due to the pandemic, many individuals will still turn up for the annual tradition.
The SoCal version of the New Year's Day ritual might not require the thick skin of, say, those who take the plunge in New England, but it could be pretty darn chilly in Venice nonetheless.
The swimming generally starts at noon (and ends fairly quickly thereafter).
The official statement from Southern California Aquatics is as follows:
This year would have been the 61st Annual Penguin Swim sponsored by the Southern California Aquatics (SCAQ)... Due to the social distancing guidelines this year’s Penguin Swim has been canceled. We will miss seeing everyone down at the beach New Year’s Day for a quick dip in the Pacific Ocean. For those that plan on carrying on this tradition on their own, stay safe and always swim where there is a lifeguard.
