Calm Morning: Turning Red
The Academy Museum offers designated hours so that kids can experience the museum in a less sensory-stimulating way.
In May, activities are inspired by the accessible screening of Turning Red (2022). ASL interpretation is provided.
SCHEDULE:
9–10am: Early Gallery Access
Guests can explore the Inventing Worlds and Characters: Animation and Effects galleries in the Stories of Cinema exhibition on Level 3, where sound and lighting adjustments are made for a more sensory-friendly viewing experience.
10–11am: Family Workshop (Shirley Temple Education Studio)
This workshop is inspired by Turning Red, which tells the story of thirteen-year-old Mei, who discovers that she turns into a giant red panda when she experiences a big emotion. Families can try out voice acting paired with clips that depict Mei’s different strong emotions in our Shirley Temple Education Studio Foley room and sound booth!
In addition to the Calm Mornings program, visitors are encouraged to attend the accessible, open-caption screening of Turning Red at 11am in the Ted Mann Theater. (Separate admission ticket required. Tickets for the film are $5 for all guests.)
The Shirley Temple Education Studio remains open during the screening as a space for relaxation and continued art-making until 1pm.
Guests with any questions or needing assistance to plan their visit may email the Museum Education department.
Calm Mornings are a free program with the purchase of general admission. Museum admission for children ages 17 and under is always free.
