UJA-Federation of New York is offering volunteer opportunities for all ages in honor of MLK Day. As part of this interfaith effort, volunteers can pack humanitarian supplies, pack food donations, prepare Blizzard Boxes, or provide foster-care duffel bags.
All projects require online registration at www.timeforgood.org/mlk-day
In Westchester, over 300 teens in grades 8 – 12 will come together to sort and pack much needed humanitarian supplies, provided by teen-run collection drives, and prepare shipments to be sent directly to the victims of recent hurricanes. J-Teen Leadership, a program of UJA, will be spearheading this Westchester-wide interfaith teen volunteer event with the AFYA Foundation, a medical supply recovery organization. This event takes place at Westchester Reform Temple, 255 Mamaroneck Avenue, Scarsdale, from 10:00 am -1:00 pm.
Fifty volunteers of all ages will pack food bags to benefit the food pantry at the Westchester Jewish Community Services (WJCS) Mary J. Blige Center in Yonkers, and write messages of encouragements to recipients. This event will take place at the JCC of Mid-Westchester, 999 Wilmot Road, Scarsdale, 9:30 -10:30 am.
Over 150 volunteers of all ages will put Dr. King’s words into action when they pack emergency kits, known as Blizzard Boxes, which will be given to local senior centers and food pantries to be used in the event of a winter weather emergency. Each box will be filled with non-perishable foods that make up a complete meal. In addition to creating the boxes, children can make notecards to include in the boxes which they can decorate. This event takes place at Shames JCC on the Hudson, 371 S. Broadway, Tarrytown from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm.
In honor of Dr. King’s message, 140 Westchester Hebrew High school students will decorate and fill duffel bags (“Sweet Cases”) for local children in foster care, who are typically placed in short-term housing and for whom the bright and beautiful bags can make packing a little less daunting.
The events are organized and promoted on Time for Good, UJA’s online volunteer platform that aggregates service opportunities from UJA’s nonprofit partners and grantees in one place so people can select projects that best utilize their skills, interests, and time to address our community’s most pressing needs.
