Teaching Africa Day is an annual, interactive, family-friendly event that brings together educational resources on Africa’s rich cultural heritage. Through an intergenerational panel discussion, readings, performances, an African marketplace, and artmaking workshops, Teaching Africa Day offers diverse narratives to teach, engage, and increase students' appreciation for the Arts of Africa.

Schedule for Saturday, September 7

  • 11am: Parade of Flags
  • 11:10am: Welcome
  • 11am-5pm: Marketplace featuring educational resources and cultural arts and crafts
  • 11am-5pm: Artmaking workshops focused on African proverbs, beads, weaving, doll making, and painting
  • 11:30am: Story Reading
  • 12pm: Lunch provided
  • 1pm: Story Reading
  • 1:20pm: Dance Performance
  • 2pm: Professional Storyteller
  • 2:30pm: Moderated Panel Discussion "Diaspora Stories of the DMV"
  • 3:40pm: Dance Performance
  • 5pm: Program concludes
