Pocono Mountains with Kids: 61 Best Things To Do as a Family

Just two hours from New York City or Philadelphia, the Pocono Mountains offer pristine natural beauty mixed with enough family-friendly activities to fill a long weekend getaway or an entire summer vacation. Truly a four-season resort area, during the winter people flock to the region for skiing and other winter sports, and the cool lake-dotted mountains draw families for swimming, hiking, boating, horseback riding, and more in the summer. It's also loaded with great water parks, both indoor and outdoor.

We've rounded up dozens of the top family attractions in the Poconos into one mega list. Given that it's a fairly large region, we've separated the list by area or town to make it easier to find what's closest to where you and your family plan to visit. Staying longer? Hit all the regions!

Largest Indoor Water Park in the US Opens at Kalahari Poconos

It’s official. Kalahari Resorts and Conventions in the Pocono Mountains is now home to the country’s largest indoor water park.

In early March the African-themed resort completed a more-than-100,000-square-foot addition to its existing indoor water park, bringing the total to 220,000 square feet, more than double its largest competitor in the Poconos vacation region, and besting the record-holder, its own Kalahari resort in Sandusky, Ohio.

The news arrives just before school kids head off for spring break, making it likely welcome news for families looking for a quick water-themed getaway, or even a day trip as Kalahari allows day-pass entry to its water park.

Best Family Resorts in the Pocono Mountains

The Pocono Mountains draw families to this scenic corner of Pennsylvania from the New York City area, Philadelphia, and across the country. For families craving adventure, there is a smorgasbord of activities on tap all year. In winter, ski, snowboard, or snow tube. Options are just as plentiful in summer: hiking, swimming, boating, zip lines and adventure ropes courses, plus plenty of nature walks and even famed waterfall hikes

In case the weather isn’t cooperating, many of the resorts have indoor water parks offering hours of splashy, weatherproof fun, and spas for the grown-ups and kids(!) to unwind and indulge. We've rounded up some of top resorts in the area, so you can see which one best fits your next family vacation.

The Best Snow Tubing Spots for New Jersey Families

When it comes to winter activities, snow tubing is one of our favorites. Of course, we love ice skating and all manner of frosty sports, but snow tubing is something the whole family can enjoy—regardless of skill. No experience is necessary, and you can tube alone or in groups. In fact, tubing is a lot like sledding, but a whole lot easier. You can barrel down the snowy slope at thrilling speeds without having to hike back up the hill. It’s done for you! Now that's the kind of winter sport we can get behind.

Camelbeach Mountain Waterpark Opens Toddler Area, Mummy's Oasis

A popular Poconos resort's water park, Camelbeach Mountain Waterpark, opened a new toddler and preschooler outdoor attraction this summer, Mummy’s Oasis. It's a fun-themed kids zone for those 48 inches and under and definitely a great place to park your family to cool off. It's one of the reasons we added this Poconos attraction to our list of best water parks near NYC for toddlers.

We visited earlier this summer and have the scoop on the dumping buckets, mini water slides, and more. Check out the NYC Beaches, Pools and Water Parks Guide for more splashing fun or our roundup on 15 Awesome New Jersey Water Parks.

Easy Waterfall Hikes in the Poconos for Families

Few things will excite a kid more on a hike than the sudden roar of rushing water. They'll race toward the falls, eager to toss in a stick to see where it'll go, mesmerized by the crashing water. But really, encountering a waterfall deep in the woods is enchanting at any age.

Families can find a trove of gorgeous waterfall hikes easy enough for children tucked into the northern end of the Pennsylvania's Delaware Water Gap—less than two hours by car from Midtown Manhattan.

These nature walks are doable in a day, however, you might want to turn this getaway into a weekend by visiting the many other family-friendly attractions in the Poconos.
