Psst. Pass it on: StoryCorps

If you've walked through Grand Central Station or in lower Manhattan's Foley Square, you may have seen the StoryCorps booth sitting there and wondered what it is for.
What is Story Corps? Here's what the website says:
StoryCorps is an independent nonprofit project whose mission is to honor and celebrate one another??™s lives through listening. By recording the stories of our lives with the people we care about, we experience our history, hopes, and humanity. Since 2003, tens of thousands of everyday people have interviewed family and friends through StoryCorps. Each conversation is recorded on a free CD to take home and share, and is archived for generations to come at the Library of Congress. Millions listen to our award-winning broadcasts on public radio and the Internet. StoryCorps is one of the largest oral history projects of its kind, creating a growing portrait of who we really are as Americans.

You can make a reservation to share your story in one of the two NYC story booths. Sharing family stories and passing on family folklore from one generation to the next is a wonderful activity to enjoy with children. I think going to the story booth with a grandparent would be an especially great thing to do with a child. Even if you don't want to visit a StoryCorps booth, take some time to think about what kinds of stories from your own life you want to pass on to your children.
The hour-long StoryBooth session is free, but a suggested donation of $10 will help cover costs of recording, archiving, and preserving each interview. TO find out how to make a reservation in NYC go to the StoryCorps website.
