Experience winter’s splendor with outdoor garden activities and a nature walk. Register in advance online for a fun, seasonal program that debuts a new theme each month.
Winter Trees - Saturday, December 11
Kids learn about the various parts of trees and their functions, and use parts of trees to make a craft to take home. Program includes a walk through the Pinetum.
Making Scents of Herbs - Saturday, January 8
Herbs create fragrances and flavors that we use in food, cosmetics, and medicines. Learn about different plant parts, identify their functions, and discover which of them we use every day. Participants visit the Herb Garden to see edible plants and make tea bag blends to take home.
Celebrating Black Botanists & the Legacy of Dr. George Washington Carver - Saturday, February 12
Learn how plants played an important role in the lives of Dr. Carver, Dr. Marie Clark Taylor, Edmond Albius, and Percy Gentle. Participants explore some plants Dr. Carver worked with, using plants to paint and to create a lotion to take home.
Bugging Out! - Saturday, March 12
Bugs are all around us! But where do they go in the wintertime? Explore the world of bugs by examining the parts of a live insect, building your own clay creepy crawly, and searching for bug homes in the garden.
Kitchen Gardening - Saturday, March 26
You can garden in the winter too! Participants learn about all the different ways to grow plants and even plant a few to take home. Class includes a sneak preview of the Children's Garden seedlings in preparation for the spring.
Note: Outdoors, vaccinated visitors and staff are not required to wear masks, regardless of distancing. Individuals may choose to still wear masks. Unvaccinated visitors are required to wear masks.
This is a fully outdoor, socially distanced program. Please dress for all weather. Masks are required for the full duration of this event. Ticket includes one child with one adult. Please purchase separate tickets for each child. This is NOT a drop-off program. Adults should plan to participate with children.
