Story Time: Bweela Steptoe presents the work of John Steptoe
Greenlight Bookstore's Lefferts Garden location and its original Fort Greene location both hold regular and very special Satuday storytimes for kids, with books read by their authors. Sometimes there's music, too!
11:30 AM Fort Greene
(Also at 1:30 PM at the Prospect Lefferts Gardens location at 632 Flatbush Avenue.)
In his twenty-year career, Brooklyn author and illustrator John Lewis Steptoe (1950-1989) published sixteen picture books. He was among the handful of African American artists who made a career in children's books, and he received two Caldecott Honors, two Coretta Scott King Awards, and was acknowledged as a pioneer for books like Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters. Now three of John’s most beloved books have been reissued in beautiful new editions: Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters, Stevie, and Baby Says! John’s daughter, Bweela Steptoe, who wrote forewords for all three books (and served as the model for the drawings in Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters), presents her father’s books with a special story time celebrating a great Brooklyn children’s book creator.
