Did you know that decorating trees for Christmas wasn't a common practice until the mid-19th century? NYC's New-York Historical Society hosts an online class to share fascinating factoids about winter traditions in 18th-century America.

Families can also learn how to make a holiday Almond Cake.

Ingredients (modern adaptation):

1 cup all purpose flour
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1/2 cup butter at room temperature
1/2 cup blanched almonds (with the skin removed) or almond paste
3 tablespoons rosewater
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves
Zest of 1 lemon
sliced almonds (optional garnish)
