CMOM zooms into May with activities celebrating Eid, Cinco de Mayo, and Mother's Day. Plus, CMOM's splishy, splashy, seasonal exhibit, Dynamic H2O is back. The 22-foot-long water table, filled with waterfalls, spinners, spouts, and shoots, the outdoor installation includes 800 sq. ft. of hands-on interactives.

Sussman Environmental Center
Dynamic H2O is CMOM’s popular seasonal outdoor exhibit that teaches children about New York City’s amazing water system. With hands-on activations and colorful graphics, the exhibit invites children to explore how New York City gets its water and the role water plays in our local environment. The experience begins with an interactive lesson on the water cycle up in the clouds. Children can then follow floating droplets as they flow downstream, past a pretend fishing hole, and are channeled over a bridge through pipes before arriving at the water’s edge, where visitors can help engineer a city!

Explore the art of calligraphy and practice your penmanship as you learn about the rich history and diversity of this writing tradition.

Extra Terrestrial Terrariums
As part of CMOM’s Connected Through Community Garden, find inspiration from plant and wildlife science fiction to create a diorama of an intergalactic ecosystem.

Alebrije Animal Puppets
Alebrijes are ornate Mexican sculptures carved out of wood and decorated with bright paint. Use neon paper to create folk art-inspired puppets, then decorate your mythical creature with paint.

A Rose by Another Name Mother’s Day Bouquet
Sculpt a wild rose bouquet out of clay while exploring species of roses indigenous to North America, like the Carolina rose, smooth rose and swamp rose.
Painted Mother’s Day Cards
Explore the art of Japanese painters Fumiko Hori and Yuki Ogura as you paint a Mother’s Day card using floral motifs and metallic paint.
Connected Through Community Garden

Celebrate Mother Earth all month long at CMOM and practice the art of nurturing flowers, birds, critters, fruits, and veggies with hands-on art and science projects. Help build a Connected Through Community Garden, an imaginary garden art installation developed and sustained by connected communities and made for aspiring horticulturists, botanists, and gardeners alike!
The Art of Floral Design

Create a sculptural paper flower arrangement using elements of art like harmony, balance, color, line, and form, also found in the Japanese art form of ikebana flower arrangement.

Teguh Ostenrik and his ARTificial Reefs

Create a sculpture inspired by Indonesian artist, Teguh Ostenrik. Ostenrik founded Yayasan Terumbu Rupa, a non-profit organization that raises awareness of marine ecosystem preservation through a series of art installations called ARTificial Reefs.

Erosion: Nature’s Sculptor

Erosion is the natural process that slowly shapes the earth using water or wind. Twist, swirl, and pinch clay to create formations inspired by this powerful force of nature.
Windy Pinwheel Making

Create pinwheels to measure the power of the wind, inspired by the work of Indian meteorologist, Anna Mani. Mani created a wide range of measurement tools to help us better understand and predict the weather.
Monumental Earth Works

Create a miniature earth artwork using natural materials! Learn more about the art form known as earthworks which are works of art made directly onto land by using objects, materials, and tools from the earth itself.
