Head over to the Edison Public Library for An Evening of Black Girl Joy. Children ages 4 and older with a parent/caregiver are invited to join authors Ali Kamanda and Jorge Redmond for a discussion and signing on their soon-to-be released picture book, Black Girl, Black Girl.

Steeped in self-esteem, Black Girl, Black Girl draws on the role models that came before us. From civil rights activists, including nurse Claudette Colvin and singer/songwriter/actress Miriam Mekaba to three-time Olympic gold medalist Wilma Rudolph to Kamala Harris, the first black female vice president of the United States, this book is an uplift ing and beautful introduction to the strong women who have touched our history.

Through illustrations and a positive message, Black Girl, Black Girl pays tribute to many strong and inspirational female role models in Black history and strives to encourage young Black girls to rise with passion and to trust in their fierce spirit and magnificent grace.

Black Girl, Black Girl is the sophomore release co-authored by Kamanda and Redmond. In 2022, the college friends teamed up and published their debut picture book, Black Boy, Black Boy, an encouraging and educational lyrical picture book aimed at inspiring boys to imagine what they can be and the great things they can do in their own lives through uplifting, motivational text with references to wonderful figures throughout history.

Copies of Black Girl, Black Girl as well as Black Boy, Black Boy will be available for purchase at the Edison Public Library’s Sept. 25 event. Registration is suggested but not required.
