Day of the Ancestors: Festival of Masks
The 9th annual Day of the Ancestors: Festival of Masks is a daylong event of mask making, life-sized puppets, art, food, music, and the discovery of the African history and culture of the surrounding communities of Leimert Park.
The festival begins with a procession around Leimert Park Village. After the procession the community gathers for a blessing and libation ceremony.
This year’s festival is highlighting the Xhosa, Ndebele, and Zulu cultures from South Africa. Wakanda, the mythical African civilization in the movie “Black Panther,” drew
significantly from indigenous South African cultures.
The Festival of Masks coincides with the Leimert Park Art Walk. Visitors can expect an abundance of activity to engage in, with art workshops furnished by LA Commons, food and fashion vendors, drum circles and much more.
