This Week's Picks: Al Fresco Food, Features, and Theater August 25 – 29

8/24/14 - By Jacqueline Stansbury

While Southern Californians needn’t worry too much about impending cold weather, as the summer of play comes to its conclusion, so will the many outdoor concerts, movies, and shows we’ve been able to enjoy these last three months. It is still possible to catch Shakespeare under the stars or a moonlight movie before sweater weather turns into “winter” (a term those of us who live here should use lightly). Here are our five picks this week for giving summer one last hurrah!

OUR LATEST VIDEOS

1. Free National Park Day – Monday
A few, very few, times a year, admission to all national parks is free. Monday, August 25th, is one of those times. If school hasn’t started and you’re looking for one more getaway before it does, this may be the ticket.

2. Moonlight Movies on the Beach - Tuesday
Summer is for being outdoors and enjoying the free things, like movies, that comer your way. This week, Steven Spielberg’s classic E.T. is featured at Granada Beach in Long Beach.

3. Shakespeare at Griffith Park – Wednesday
Experience theater in the park – gratis. If you haven’t been yet, be sure to go before summer ends. Bring a picnic and revel as the shrew is tamed!

4. Free Day at the Skirball – Thursday
Thursdays are free at the Skirball, and you’ve probably been meaning to get there all summer. While there is no charge for Noah’s Ark, this is a popular attraction, and an advance reservation is required. With or without a Noah's Ark reservation, though, the Family Art Studio program is available through the end of August and requires no reservation, even on the free day.

5. The Orange International Street Festival – Friday
Head to Orange where each street in this festival represents a different country. Enjoy international cuisine and crafts, and celebrate something universal: children, who have a street dedicated to them with games, activities, and a kid centric stage.
