The Legends of the Chinese Zodiac Produced by Express Children's Theatre and Dance of Asian America at Miller Outdoor
- see all dates
Miller Outdoor Theatre presents The Great Zodiac Race, a two-part theatrical and dance production that brings to life one of the most enduring tales in Asian folklore. Through a captivating blend of movement and storytelling, this family-friendly show offers both a visually stunning experience and an engaging introduction to the origins of the Chinese zodiac.
Part 1: June 17th
Part 2: June 18th
According to ancient legend, the Jade Emperor wanted to be able to keep track of time and decided to create a 12-month zodiac. But what animals should represent each month and how should they be selected? The Emperor decided to hold a Great Race, open to all animals (real and mythological) in his Kingdom. The prize: the first twelve to cross the finish line would be assigned to a month on the zodiac in the order they arrived, and their individual characteristics would represent human beings born during those months.
A story so big it has to be told with a combination of dance and theatre, as well as divided into two parts, this production dramatizes the dreams, trials and tribulations of all the animals involved and how each came to win (or lose!) their special place on the zodiac.
Fun, fast-paced, colorful and hilarious, this race will have you cheering on your favorites, booing the villains and otherwise learning about one of the cornerstones of Asian cultures the world over. A great refresher for families familiar with the zodiac and a great introduction for those new to it.
Plan on coming to both parts to see the entire epic!
The third collaboration between Express Children’s Theatre and Dance of Asian America specifically created and performed for Miller Outdoor Theatre audiences.
