Boston will once again be plunged into darkness as the moon hides from the sun in the Earth's shadow. It's a total lunar eclipse this time, with the totality starting at 2:58am.

The moon appears to be a reddish color during the totality phase, hence the name "Blood Moon".

  • 1:09 am, Fri, Mar 14: Partial Eclipse begins — Partial moon eclipse starts; moon is getting red. (South, 187°, Altitude 50.0°)
  • 2:26 am, Fri, Mar 14: Total Eclipse begins — Total moon eclipse starts; completely red moon. (Southwest, 214°, Altitude 44.7°)
  • 2:58 am, Fri, Mar 14: Maximum Eclipse — Moon is closest to the center of the shadow. (Southwest, 223°, Altitude 40.9°)
  • 3:31 am, Fri, Mar 14: Total Eclipse ends — Total moon eclipse ends. (Southwest, 232°, Altitude 36.3°)
  • 4:47 am, Fri, Mar 14: Partial Eclipse ends — Partial moon eclipse ends. (West-southwest, 248°, Altitude 24.1°)
  • 6:00 am, Fri, Mar 14: Penumbral Eclipse ends — The Earth's penumbra ends. (West, 2°)

NOTE: If skies are clear, the eclipse should be visible to the unaided eye in almost all of North America, (and much of South America!) It is safe to view a lunar eclipse without any eye protection. You do not need a telescope to see a lunar eclipse. Just go outside and look up!
