Go Mom! 5 Cool Ways to Celebrate Mother's Day in NYC Without the Kids
It's rare that we write about things to do without children on Mommy Poppins but, the fact is, while eating Mother's Day brunch and enjoying fun activities with the kids is lovely, some years, what you really want for your day is something all about, well, you. (Apologies to any dads reading right now, but you get your own Sunday in June.) We've gathered up some off the beaten path ideas for Mother's Day (and beyond) that don't include sticky fingers or crafts made out of pipe cleaners. From wine tastings to adults-only performances, here are five ways to celebrate Mother's Day without the bambinos.

Hear Mom Speak
Mommy Poppins is proud to be a sponsor of Listen to Your Mother, the annual reading series on the topic of motherhood from moms, non-moms and even a few dudes. Performed on Mother's Day in 24 cities, the NYC show takes place at Symphony Space at 5pm and has some great people like EIC of BlogHer, Inc, Stacy Morrison; Lost in Suburbia: A Momoir author Tracy Beckerman; and Sandy Rustin, author of the Off-Broadway show Rated P For Parenthood. Our amazingly funny Mommy Poppins NJ Editor, Shari Simpson, is also reading an autobiographical tale about growing up in the Midwest with a belly dancer for a mother (yes, that's belly, not ballet). This show is the perfect no-kids end to your Mother's Day.
Look at Mom Go
We've done the Greenwich Village Food and Culture Walking Tour through Foods of New York and it's a great date. You get to try new, delicious foods while finding out more about the amazing city you live in, all while on a walk sans strollers. The same company offers similar tours of Chelsea Market/Meatpacking District, Central Village/Soho, Nolita and Chinatown. There are tours every day, even on Sunday, May 12. Now that's the way to do Mother's Day brunch!
Go, Mom, Go
Dutchess County offers lots of opportunities for family fun, but for a grown-ups-only outing try Millbrook Vineyards for wine tasting without the kids. The vineyard is gorgeous, the wines wonderful. You can even get there without a car by taking Metro-North to the Vineyard Express Shuttle, which whisks you from the train to the vineyard in no time.
Play, Mom, Play
For 364 days a year, mom is just mom, but each year, on the Saturday after Mother's Day, one group of moms reclaim their sexy at the Hot Mama Burlesque, the world's only all-moms burlesque show. Hosted and produced by Mommy Poppins' own Raven, it's a fun night out for all the moms involved, both the ones on stage and the ones in the audience cheering them on. It's simultaneously silly, amusing and empowering. See it at the Slipper Room on Saturday, May 18 at 6pm.
See Mom Relax
Of course, if you want to go the more traditional route, there are lots of spas offering special deals for Mother's Day, like the brand-new N4 Med Spa in Williamsburg, which has Mommy-centric spa packages like massages, mani/pedis, hydra-facials, and peppermint and seaweed sugar body scrubs. We also love Spa Castle, which is an affordable way to pamper yourself any day. Try a hot stone massage, snack on sushi and frozen yogurt, and hang out in the Jacuzzi in the rooftop pool. It's a kid-friendly place but who says you need to go there with kids?
