Opening: Academy Museum of Motion Pictures
- see all dates
Lights, camera, exhibition! The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences opens a museum dedicated to the art of moviemaking.
The museum shines a light on the artistic and technical elements that come together to create cinematic works. Galleries and installations explore narrative movies, documentaries, and animation; inaugural exhibits look at the Wizard of Oz, Spike Lee's works and influences, the art of the backdrop, and the films of Hayao Miyazaki.
A wide array of props and memorabilia are on view, such as an extraterrestrial headpiece from Alien, the shark from Jaws, a pair of Dorothy's ruby slippers, and the typewriter used to write the screenplay for Psycho. Films are shown year round in the Museum's two state of the art theaters.
Timed admission tickets to the Academy Museum are now on sale. Advance reservations must be made online.
The museum is open 365 days a year. Hours are 10am - 6pm Sunday through Thursday, 10am - 8pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
