Living History @ Home: Cooking for the Civil Rights Movement

Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day and discover the overlooked work of Black women in the civil rights movement. Educators from NYC's DiMenna Children's History Museum share the story of Georgia Gilmore and how she used her kitchen skills to raise money in secret for the Montgomery, Alabama, bus boycott.

Participants can also learn how to bake Gilmore’s sweet potato pie.

Pie Filling:

  • 3 large sweet potatoes (orange flesh), boiled whole with skins on for about 30 minutes or until fork can easily pierce them
  • 8 tablespoons (1 stick) melted butter
  • 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup half-and-half
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Pie Crust:

  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup vegetable shortening, chilled
  • 1/3 cup ice water
