City of Water 2020: Blueline Exhibition in the Seaport District
- see all dates
City of Water Day explores the BlueLine—the future high tide line—highlighting the risk of sea-level rise and coastal storms. Three extraordinary climate artists share their unique perspectives on climate issues and rising sea levels through artistic expression using multiple mediums.
We Are the Asteroid II, by artist Justin Brice Guariglia, is a sandblasted solar-powered LED highway message board that loops six ecological aphorisms written for Guariglia by eco philosopher Timothy Morton. The board flashes surprising poetry, metaphor, and humor to challenge viewers to think ecologically while breaking down barriers to stimulate conversations about the environment.
WAVES, by Kamau Ware, is an intervention into the physical and psychic space of the Seaport District, illustrating the connected history between the Indigenous people of New York and the Africans from the Congo and Angola in the 17th century on the island of Manhattan. WAVES is a composition of four flags symbolizing these nations and the space between memory and resilience.
Sarah Cameron Sunde's 36.5 / A Durational Performance with the Sea (2013 – present) is a series of nine site-specific participatory performances and video works created in locations around the world that are threatened by rising sea levels. The performances are filmed in real time from multiple perspectives and then turned into durational video works that are the same length as each performance, providing a slow and sensory experience for viewers. For Waterfront Alliance’s BlueLine Art Walk at the South Street Seaport, Sunde will install outdoor video projections on Pier 17: 9/12, 9/17, 9/25, 9/26 from 7pm-10:30pm.
