Leonardo Drew's City in the Grass is a large-scale aluminum, sand, and wood relief sculpture that rises from Madison Square Park’s Oval Lawn.
Meticulously applying colored sand to an aluminum substructure, Drew has built layer on layer of materials while using the metaphor of a torn carpet as a complicated reference to home, comfort, and sanctuary. Through discrete sections in modified grids, his panorama has highs and lows that summon a bird’s-eye view of urban skyscrapers and city streets.
Viewers may gaze onto the work from above but are also able to physically engage with the project by nestling next to it while seated on the lawn’s green expanse.
