Things to do this weekend - Fun Festivals and More for Father's Day: June 19 -20, 2010
This weekend NYC’s neighborhood parks are teeming with live music and theater, not to mention carnivals, parades, fishing, bike racing and craft making. Plus some of your children’s favorite television personalities can be found trolling the city this weekend. There is a cool dinosaur event at the main NY public library, an awesome bike pareade in Queens and free concert at the Scholastic Store. And don’t forget that Saturday is the annual Mermaid Parade in Coney Island.
No matter what you do have a great weekend and Happy Father’s Day to all our amazing Dads.

Imagination Playground Pop Up Tour—Staten Island
Get a sneak preview of what that new playground at the Seaport will be offering by while the “playground in a box” component of the new Imagination Playground will be touring NYC playgrounds this summer. Kids can experience the loose components like huge blocks of foam, mats, wagons and crates for kids to use in a creative open ended manner. This playground should offer the kind of unstructured creative play that is so important for their development. FREE
Hunts Point Fish Parade and Summer Carnival – Hunts Point
So big it needs two locations. A festival with live music, a basketball tournament, boat rides, face painting and school kids performing in a talent contest along with a huge marine life themed parade with floats and costumed marchers. FREE
Adventures NYC – Central Park
A day of outdoor adventure awaits you in Central Park with a ton of activities for the whole gang to try. Learn something new like rock climbing, fishing, cycling, bird watching, yoga and a lot more. There will also be free bike rentals and free bike helmets to keep! FREE
Crest Fest 10 & Crest Hardware Art Show Opening -- Williamsburg
Picnic on the Promenade—Brooklyn Heights
Bring a picnic lunch and join in on the fun at the Brooklyn Heights Promenade. Enjoy your lunch in one of the most beloved open spaces in the city while listening to the Deedle Dees and watching a mother daughter fashion show. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Brooklyn Heights Association, Crumbs Bake Shop will be kicking off the day with a cupcake ceremony. The first 100 kids will get a cupcake – so hurry! FREE.
Dinosaurs – Midtown East
Learn all about dinosaurs by joining in on an excavation, learn to tell the difference between herbivores and carnivores, how they hunted and make a fossil replica cast. FREE
Long Island City Bike Parade—Long Island City
A fun annual biking event for families where kids can decorate their bikes and then ride them in a colorful and car free parade in the streets from the Socrates Sculpture Park to Queensbridge Park where a fun festival with music, games and food will be waiting.. FREE
SummerFest! --Fort Greene
The third annual community festival of the Urban Assembly of Arts and Letters Middle School is sure to be fun. Watch an exciting performance of the Brooklyn Steppers, grab a bite at the Fort Greene/Clinton Hill Food Fest with neighborhoods food faves like Sugar Cane and Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory participating. You can see the fine work and art being done at the school, play some games and of course the ever popular face painting. Cool raffle prizes, too. FREE
Clifford’s Big Parade – Midtown East
Join everyone’s favorite big red dog for a special story time in the outdoor Bryant Park Reading Room featuring music, games and crafts. FREE
Cyberchase Satuday—TriBeCa
The Tribeca Cinema Kids Club’s final showing for the summer is two brand new Cyberchase cartoons. Make sure to hang around after the movie to meet the characters or some of the actors and other folks behind the series. Tickets are between $7 and $18.
Morris-Jumel Mansion Family Day—Washington Heights
The oldest house in Manhattan was once the headquarters for George Washington during the revolution. Today it is a museum all about life in the 18th and 19th Centuries and it is hosting a fun day where families can tour the house, kids can learn about Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad and even act in a short play on the subject. There will also be period games and crafts to enjoy. FREE
Putumayo Kids Rock and Roll Playground Concert - SoHo
This is sure to be a great time. The soon-to-be-released CD features music inspired by the roots of rock & roll from a great group of family friendly rockers. StarFish, featured on the new CD will be playing an old time rock and roll concert FREE but reservations are required.
Wild, Wild World: Snakes and Lizards—Upper West Side
Learn all about snakes and lizards with Chad Peeling of Reptiland in a live animal demonstration with a gila monster, cobra, and large boa constrictor. Tickets are: $12 for adults and $10 for children.

Skyscraper Harlem Cycling Classic—Harlem
Cycling kids can race to win the Mayors Cup and be named “the fastest rider in New York City.” Winners of each age group will be presented with a brand new bike. Make sure to stick around and watch the professional riders compete and don’t miss the special appearance by DJ Lance Rock from Yo Gabba Gabba. FREE
Walk Through a Story Book – Central Park
Take a kid friendly walking tour around Central Park to the many statues that live there and learn all about the stories they tell. FREE
Father’s Day Eco Crafts – Staten Island
Hike through the Blue Heron Park Preserve looking for natural materials to collect and take back to the nature center to make a craft for Dad. FREE
Explore the Shore -- Queens
Get wet with the Urban Park Rangers while you use seining nets to fish for crabs, clams and other sea life in Little Bay. FREE
Outside of NYC:
If you are headed to New Jersey this weekend you will probably drive right past the bright colorful NJ State Fair taking place in the Meadowlands parking lot, why not check it out, it is full of fun like bubble wrap popping, carnival rides, pig racing and a petting zoo. Tickets are $9 for adults, $6 for children under 12, and children under 34" are FREE. Parking is $3.
