Saturn and Jupiter converge in the night sky, appearing to be so close they almost touch. The phenomenon is sometimes called the Christmas Star, since the peak happens on Winter Solstice, a few days before Christmas.

The two gas giants have not appeared this close in the sky in hundreds of years.

To view this celestial event, families are advised to look in the southwestern or western horizon about 45 minutes after sunset. The effect peaks on December 21, but the planets can be viewed as early as December 16 or 17.
