After the sun sets, Wave Hill belongs to the creatures of the night. Bats, fireflies, katydids, and more emerge from their daytime slumber to animate the grounds far from human eyes and ears. On these exclusive evenings, immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of nature after dark with a series of indoor and outdoor nature experiences.

All programs include an outdoor component unless inclement weather cancels. Ages 12 and older welcome with an adult. Space is limited!

Friday, July 11: Bats of the Bronx

This special evening concludes with a guided bat walk, using bat detectors to listen for and identify local bat species in real time. Don’t miss this opportunity to discover the hidden world of bats living right in your own backyard or local green space.

Friday, July 18: Life among the Raptors

A Nighttime Nature Walk through the shadowy gardens to watch lightning bugs, crickets, and katydids fill the air with a natural sound and light show. Local naturalist Melissa Weaver guides your way along woodland edges and open lawns where nocturnal creatures abound.

Friday, July 25: Hanging with the Herps

Environmental educators from Tenafly Nature Center highlight the characteristics that distinguish reptiles from amphibians, using animal ambassadors as living examples. Expect up-close encounters with live snakes, frogs, salamanders, and turtles in this fun and engaging nature program for adults and older kids.

Complete your evening with a Nighttime Nature Walk.

Friday, August 1: Summer Nights, Starry Nights

Begin in Armor Hall with an introduction to the night sky and download helpful apps for your cell phone to assist with locating stars, planets, and constellations (not required). Then head outside to observe the stars from a viewing location on the Great Lawn. Test out a variety of telescopes and chat with the astronomers about celestial objects on view.
