MoMath Mix-n-Mingle: Unraveling Braids

Sat Sep 13, 2025
6:30pm to 8:30pm ET
Age: Middle and High School Students
Price: $10
Location:
National Museum of Mathematics

Middle and high school students can indulge in an evening of parent-free mathematical fun during MoMath’s mix-n-mingle program. This month, tangle up rope, string, and leather as you dive into the exciting world of mathematical braids!

What makes a braid untangle-able? How can we make fractions of braids without splitting strings? Can computers help? Mathematician and MOST Fellow Hannah Fechtner shows tweens and teens how to break down these knotty questions (pun intended), and try out some other twisty tricks.

Plus, explore dynamic exhibits, enjoy fun, hands-on mathematical exploration, and boogie down on New York City’s only interactive, light-up Voronoi dance floor, all with a peer group that thinks math is cool.

Register online in advance.

An adult chaperone (a parent, guardian, or other designated provider) must be present to sign in/out each student. The adult chaperone must provide a mobile number to be contacted in the event of an emergency during the event. Students cannot sign themselves in for the event nor self-dismiss, and curbside drop-offs and pick-ups cannot be accommodated. Exceptions may be made for students over 16 with ID.
