Beam Center’s OtherWorlds Fair is a brand-new free festival designed and run by NYC public high school students, offering people of all ages hands-on workshops, exhibits and performances in fashion, food, storytelling, design, and music that showcase the joyous fusion of cultures, identities and creative visions of today's New York City teenagers.
OtherWorlds Fair workshops include:
- PAINTING WITH BLEACH Create exquisite custom tote bags and learn a new creative medium using one of the most common household materials - Bleach!
- STORYTELLING BRACELETS Walk away with stylish jewelry that tells a story in just 10 letters crafted from beads you make from recycled magazines.
- FOOD & PLANT PRINTMAKING Ink up and recombine textures from marigolds, island flowers, apples, oranges, potatoes and more to adorn textile accessories.
- FLOWER BABY HUNT Follow a path of riddles in a hunt for pewter cast insects hidden around the fairgrounds. Return them to the anthropomorphic Flower Creature and make a Wildflower Seed Bomb as a reward!
- LOLLIPOP PADDLE DRUMS & ACOUSTIC BRACELETS Build personalized percussion instruments and learn to use them to compose your own beats and dances.
OtherWorlds Fair performances and exhibits include:
- Noel Pointer Foundation String Ensemble
- Building Beats DJ Sets
- Fashion Show featuring a collection of handcrafted looks inspired by the seasons
- Big Bloom, a gazebo of fabric and wood draped with giant moving flowers
- Handmade Mangrove Tree that holds storytelling jewelry and charms
- Series of 3 customized longboards that depict an otherworldly astrological narratives.
- Exhibitions of miniature OtherWorlds built by students from all over NYC
- Music & Dance: inspired by genres from all over the world
- Food: Unveiling of the Big Feast, a website that tells NYC youths’ story of NYC youth diversity through recipes
