Fernandes Education Advocates

Fernandes Education Advocates offers the services families in New York City actually need. The founder, Mary Fernandes, can assist families with special education advocacy for children from age 3 to 21, including in the following areas:

  • consultations and records reviews;
  • strategy and parent coaching;
  • prep and participation in IEP/504 meetings;
  • self-advocacy coaching for students participating in IEP meetings;
  • drafting parent-directed letters and complaints;
  • support around evaluations, placements, and related services;
  • support with compensatory education and pendency;
  • and much more.

When a situation calls for an attorney, Mary coordinates closely with counsel so families don’t lose momentum. Mary brings a calm, practical style shaped by 13 years as an NYC public-school special education teacher and 11 years as a legal writer/paralegal for special-education law firms. Just as important, she’s walked this road herself—she has advocated for her own son with autism—so she understands both the system and the emotions that come with it. Fernandes Education Advocates is here to demystify a process which is often confusing and overwhelming for families.

Mary Fernandes is a non-attorney advocate who provides representation at due process hearings on a limited basis. When attorney representation is needed, she refers families to licensed attorneys and collaborates to keep the plan on track.
