Best Houston Neighborhoods and Homes for Viewing Holiday Lights

During the most magical time of the year, there are many ways to get your holiday light fix. Houston has beautiful public lighting displays, but nothing beats driving the family around a neighborhood in your Christmas pajamas. For those evenings when you want to enjoy the beauty of the holiday season at your own pace, it's helpful to know which Houston neighborhoods go above and beyond in the decoration department.

We've rounded up the neighborhoods with must-see lighting displays, so all you have to do is gather the family into the car, turn on some holiday tunes, and explore the Bayou City on your own time. However, many neighborhoods prefer visitors between 6-10 p.m. Lights are typically up from Thanksgiving through New Years. 16 Kid-Friendly Restaurants With Room to Play in Houston

Relaxing on the patio with good food and drinks is something that, prior to kids, we used to love to do... and then we had kids and going out to eat became nothing short of a nightmare that quickly got nixed from our weekend plans. Where we once sat back and talked uninterrupted about our respective weeks, we now went through constant rounds of "don't touch that!" and, "honey, leave those nice people alone." All seemed lost, and we resigned ourselves to spending our evenings out at Chick-fil-A... until we found restaurants with play spaces for kids (we also spent an exhaustive amount of time eating near the green area at CityCentre).

Talk about a game changer - it's like these restaurants knew that us parents needed a space to unwind a bit with the kids in tow, and they delivered with patios that opened up to enclosed playgrounds, sand pits (ok, this one is a catch-22 because of sand everywhere), and toys.

Shop Local & Fresh Goods at These Houston-Area Farmers Markets

Family trips to the local farmers' market are the best. There's just nothing that quite compares to walking past stands stocked with colorful produce and local treasures and knowing that whatever you bring home is going to be fresh, seasonal, and bursting with flavor. It's also a great way to encourage healthy eating with your kids; I know mine loves to pick out fresh fruits and vegetables to bring home each week!

No matter where you live in the greater Houston area, there's a farmers' market nearby. The city is also home to several farms where you can pick your own produce! Now, what are you waiting for - check out these local gems.

9 Free Pools in Houston To Know About

I grew up in Northern Michigan in a town that often makes the news for beating the record for the most snowfall and the coldest temperatures, and somehow I was lucky enough to have a pool in my backyard. I loved jumping into that pool after working out or having friends over to swim, and now that I live in a city with weather that could accommodate an almost endless pool season, there is, unfortunately, no pool outside my back door. Instead, we take advantage of Houston's many free community pools. The city of Houston has 37 FREE community pools open June 4 - August 12 (in the 2017 season) from 1-8 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday and from August 13 - Sept. 5 on Saturdays and Sundays only.

17 Festivals for Houston Families in May

April showers bring May flowers...and festivals! A lot of festivals. Houston is a diverse city and many festivals give Houstonians the opportunity to explore different cultures through music, dance, and traditional foods. This month there are also art, music, and literature-focused fests as well as themed festivals, from Star Wars to the Renaissance. So, in addition to celebrating Mother's Day and planning your summer vacations, make sure to get out of the house and take the whole family to an amazing festival in the Bayou City.

St. Patrick's Day Fun at Houston's Family Friendly Breweries

The craft beer scene in Houston is as rich and varied as the city itself, and in addition to serving up good beer, many local breweries cater to families by offering a relaxed environment for kids to run around while parents hang out. While the focus in March is typically on Rodeo and Spring Break, there's another holiday that deserves celebrating, too: St. Patrick's Day! And what better way to celebrate than supporting your local beer masters. We rounded up several breweries around town that are opening their doors with festive cheer on St. Patrick's Day this year, so you can relax with a good beer, enjoy games and contests for the family, and fill up on delicious local fare from favorite food trucks around town.
