Eight Bells for Memorial Day

Location:
USS Constitution Museum

In US Navy tradition, eight bells are rung for the death of a sailor, signifying his or her watch is forever over. On Memorial Day, honor the dead of Constitution’s historic crew by writing their names on a paper bell for display in the museum.

The deaths of these nearly 270 men teach about the hazards to life and limb on an early warship, and remind everyone of the bravery required by the nation’s military personnel throughout history and today.
