Indoor Activities: Free Show and Museum Tickets this Week

nytimes-art.jpg This week is The New York Times Arts and Leisure Week. It's not technically a kid festival, but there's plenty to take advantage of for kids and some great discounts on indoor activities to take the baby, including kid shows and circuses and lots of children's and child-friendly museums.

Theater I went to see August: Osage County this weekend. Definitely not a kid show, but a very well-written, acted and produced dark comedy. During New York Times Arts and Leisure Week, you can get two-for-the-price-of-one tickets to that and several shows that would be fun for the kids like The Gazillion Bubble Show, Hairspray, STOMP, and The Fantasticks. Some other interesting choices would be "The Perfect Monster" by TADA! Youth Theater, the performance created by students in the TADA! Theater program. I also think a lot of kids would enjoy the opera's performed by the Gilbert and Sullivan Players who will be performing "The Mikado" and "The Pirates of Penzance" in matinee's next weekend. We took our daughter to the Mikado when she was 7 and she loved it. I'm hoping to snag some Pirates of Penzance tickets this year. To find out how to get the NY Times Arts and Leisure Week discount tickets for any of these shows go to the site, click on the link for special cultural offerings and then choose your state and the category you are looking for. Each venue has different instructions. Museums Many museums are offering to give a free second admission when you buy one full price from today through January 13th, assuming it is normally open. This is a great opportunity to grab a friend and get to one of those museums you keep meaning to get to. The best museums for kids that are participating are The Brooklyn Museum, The Children's Galleries for Jewish Culture, Children's Museum of the Arts, Museum of the Moving Image, New York City Police Museum, Staten Island Children's Museum, and the Wycoff Farmhouse Museum, plus the Metropolitan Museum, the Whitney, the Guggenheim and many others that are not children's museums, but are a great indoor activities for babies and kids. Performance and Attractions If you're interested, it's worth digging around the site a little more. You'll also find "get the second ticket free" for the Harlem Globetrotters, Madame Tussaud's and other fun stuff under Attractions and, under Performance, some great shows for kids at Symphony Space, like "Circus Incognitus". If you're up for planning ahead you can get this deal for the Moscow Circus which will be at the Kupferberg Center in March. Hopefully that answers the question of what to do this week. Now the only question is: Why don't I ever remember to buy my own tickets before I write these things!?!
