Although the days are still filled with sunshine, playground and pool time, there’s no denying the fact that the school year is on the horizon. Why not combine some end of summer fun with a little educational twist that will get everybody back in the learning mode? Check out the cool Retro Science Egg Drop at Liberty Science Center, create Paleo Art at Field Station: Dinosaurs or learn about animals and their environments at the Whittemore Wildlife Sanctuary’s Tales & Trails program. Retro Science: Egg Drop to the Egg-Treme! (Jersey City, NJ)
Crack! Splat! It’s all about the eggs as you check out the latest installment of Retro Science at the Liberty Science Center this weekend. Find out if your egg can survive a 30-foot balcony drop unbroken.  Then show off your engineering skills and build your own egg-proof device using unique materials to cushion the raw egg’s fall. It will be a crash course on gravity and motion! After your science session, explore other neat exhibits like the Eat or Be Eaten reptile wing to the I Explore room just for tots ages 2 to 5. All ages welcome. Saturday & Sunday 11am-3pm. Free with museum admission. 201-200-1000

A Year with Frog and Toad (Hackettstown, NJ)
Looking for a little summer entertainment? Head to the Centenary Little Theater for a wonderful performance of A Year with Frog and Toad. Waking from hibernation in the spring, Frog and Toad plant gardens, swim, rake leaves, go sledding and learn life lessons along the way. The two best friends celebrate the differences that make them unique in a charming story of a friendship that weathers all seasons. Recommended for ages 3 & up. Paleo Art Weekend (Secaucus, NJ)
If you haven’t checked out Field Station: Dinosaurs yet, this weekend’s Paleo Art workshop is a great time to go. Round up your dino lovers and get your hands dirty as your whole family learns what it’s like to be a dig site sketcher. Field Station staff will assist as you draw your very own dinosaur with simple, step by step instructions. At the end of the session, your creation will help to create a colossal prehistoric mural. And of course, be sure and stick around after your art session to check out the life-sized dino replicas that the park is known for! All ages welcome. Saturday & Sunday 10am-6pm. Prices vary.

Saturday, August 17th

Nature Story Time (Tenafly, NJ)
The family friendly Tenafly Nature Center is hosting their monthly story time this Saturday. Your group will gather round the TNC porch for a nature-themed story time and then get a surprise visit from one of the center’s many animals. Get up close and personal with a snake, frog, turtle or even an owl as you learn about their role in the environment. Kids and grownups are welcome to ask questions during this interactive session! And if you’ve got energy to burn afterwards, head outside for a summertime hike. Recommended for ages 3 to 7. 11:30am-12:30pm. Free for Members, $5/Person Non-Members.

Tales & Trails (Oldwick, NJ)
If you want to make the most of what’s left of summer while spending some quality family time, Whittemore Wildlife Sanctuary is hosting their final Tales & Trails program of the season this Saturday. Kids (and grownups too!) will be active participants in the learning process as everyone helps to tell nature’s stories. The theme for this week is all about animals and their “Home Sweet Homes.” You can then spend the afternoon exploring the sanctuary – explore the frog pond, blue bird sighting area or duck lake as you hike one of the beautiful trails. All ages welcome. Pre-registration required. 1:30-3pm. $30/Family.

Sunday, August 18th

Rebel the Pony Event (Basking Ridge, NJ)
Horse lovers, this one’s for you! Lord Sterling Stables and their beloved pony Rebel invite you to take part in all things equestrian this Sunday. Kids can line up for slow paced pony rides or just pet one of the friendly horses that call the stables home! And the whole gang can jump onboard for a hay ride to explore the 18 miles of peaceful trails. If a day full of horses isn’t enough, you can check out their fall and winter class schedule, weekend group trail rides and introductory rides for beginner lessons. All ages welcome. 10am-4pm.
