10 Cool Things Happening Now: Camp Fairs, Free Swimming Classes and Ice Skating, Hot Chocolate Festival and More

1/27/11 - By Anna Fader

There's just so much freaking cool stuff going on all the time in NYC and if I wasn't so busy staring in disbelief at all the snow I would write up each of these things separately, but as it is I have a lot of ironic tweeting and facebooking to do about how unbelievable this winter has been. Who has time to blog?

Seriously though, read on because there's a bunch of really neat things that you want to know about from free swimming and ice skating to a play that offers babysitting as well as theater. Plus s'mores, hot cocoa, a baby and me lunch deal and more.

Today, January 27th, the High Line is hosting a Snow Sculpt-Off starting at 2pm. Compete for prizes or just check out all the creative snow sculptures others will make.

If you can look past the snow and think about summer, this weekend are two camp fairs (one downtown and one in Brooklyn) where you can meet dozens of camp directors and find the perfect camp for your child.

Playwrights Horizons, has taken a new approach to get people to come out to a show—they're offering babysitting. Buy tickets to a matinee performance of their upcoming show "Kin" and your kids ages 4-12 can hang out with babysitters at the theater while you watch the show. The service is free for theater subscribers or $15 for everyone else. It's a cool idea and I hope other productions will consider it.

Another way to get a night out is the Pajama Party at Playgarden in TriBeCa this Saturday night (Jan 29). Run by students from NYU, your kids get a night of games, pizza, crafts, stories and more while you get a night out on your own. $40 for the first child and prorated for additional siblings, it's more fun than a sitter and 100% of the proceeds go to help homeless teenagers.

If you'd rather have a date with your baby (girlfriends invited too), head to Tribeca Grill's Baby and Me lunch. This renown restaurant offers an entree plus a glass of wine for $15 every Tuesday starting February 8th from 1:30-3pm, which is less than most entrees alone usually. Tribeca Citizen has the tempting menu. Anyone have a baby I can have on loan?

While you're in the neighborhood you might stop by the W Hotel which just installed a very small artificial ice skating rink. Ice skating is free (for 15 people at time) and you can rent skates for $12. MOre of a novelty than a true destination, but might be worth dropping in.

For another novel ice skating experience, this time in Queens, try the Ice Skating in Atlas Park where Shiro of Japan has partnered with Aviator to offer an Ice Skating Children's Hibachi Meal Combo Birthday Party Special. For just $14.99 you get an hour of skating (skates included) plus a chicken or steak hibachi meal.

City Bakery Hot Chocolate Festival runs in February with different flavors of hot cocoa every day for the entire month. They're kicking it off a s'mores stand on Sunday, January 30th with homemade marshmallows toasted on an open fire ($5).

This weekend is the time to register for the Parks Department's free swimming classes. This year you don't have to go to the rec center to sign up, just sign up on line on January 29th. Spots will be assigned on a lottery system.

The JCC is offering free 1-week Health Club Memberships to try out their gym, but you can also buy a day pass to their swimming pool any time and so do these other indoor swimming pools.
