STREB Inc.

For more than 40 years, STREB Extreme Action has thrilled and enthused a diverse and widespread audience with their choreographed feats of physicality, scientifically planned chaos, strength, risk, grace, and elegance. The company has scaled the heights of the experimental dance world and delved deep into the cutting-edge of popular entertainment.

STREB has performed on stages across the globe from Paris’s Théâtre du Châtelet to New York’s City Center to the spokes of the London Eye and the streets of Montreal alongside Cirque du Soleil.

In January 2003, STREB moved into a vacant former loading facility and transformed 51 North 1st Street into the STREB Lab for Action Mechanics (SLAM). In 2007, STREB purchased SLAM with unprecedented support for building acquisition from the New York City’s Department of Cultural Affairs, the New York City Council, the Mayor’s Office and the Brooklyn Borough President’s Office ensuring its future as the home of STREB Extreme Action, the STREB PopAction School and the Espana/STREB Trapeze Academy. As a performance and presenting venue and an open access education and rehearsal space, SLAM creates community through interaction and experimentation. STREB believes it is one of the few authentic public spaces; its doors are always open, open to everyone.

STREB offers Kids Classes in PopAction, Trampoline, and Flying Trapeze for movers of all levels. Developed by Elizabeth Streb over the last 40+ years, PopAction classes help movers acquire new skills by posing unique challenges: change your base of support in a rapid fire way, physically designate specific locations in vertical and horizontal space, learn to pop the muscles to initiate action (rather than skeletally transferring weight), train for impact, learn to fly with low-to-the-ground maneuvers that increase spatial awareness, and incorporate a timing system that is not musical but physical (“felt timing”).  STREB operates on a ‘personal best’ philosophy—the technique is approachable and adaptable for all body types, ages, and skill sets.
