Mostly Free & Fun Things To Do With NJ Kids This Weekend Sept 20-21: Oktoberfest, Fall Farm Fun, Storytelling Festival & More!
The humidity has dropped, high temps are just reaching the low 70s and the official start of fall is around the corner. Enjoy this sweet spot of the year before it gets too chilly with an outdoor activity: pick some juicy ripe apples during Fall Family Fun Days at Alstede Farms, sample schnitzel and listen to authentic German music at the Crystal Springs Oktoberfest or take the kiddos out to a minor league ballgame at TD Bank Ball Park. For more fresh air fun, check out the NJ Storytelling Festival at the beautiful Grounds for Sculpture or take a Migration Walk at Stony Brook-Millstone Reserve. Fall Family Fun Days (Chester, NJ)
If you’re looking for the perfect activity to get your family in a fall frame of mind, check out the Family Fun Days at the Mommy Poppins favorite Alstede Farms. Things to do include: the giant corn maze, pick-your-own apples, giant hay pyramid, pony rides, wagon train rides, friendly farm animals and delicious eats to take home from the farm stand!
Oktoberfest at Mountain Creek (Vernon, NJ)
Calling all schnitzel lovers! Head on down to the annual Crystal Springs Resort Oktoberfest for authentic German eats (plus beer for the grown ups!), the German Brass Band, carnival rides & games, a pie-eating contest and pony rides. Added bonus: come dressed in traditional Oktoberfest attire and receive free admission.
Somerset Patriots vs. Bridgeport Bluefish (Bridgewater, NJ)
Take in a minor league baseball game with the kiddos before the weather turns cold! Take your pick from one of three games this weekend and see the Somerset Patriots take on the Bridgeport Bluefish at TD Bank Ballpark. Saturday’s game includes professional bagpipe performers and a firework show after dark. Sunday is fan appreciation day, with autographs from the players – and all kids are invited to run the bases in the post-game Diamond Derby.

The perfect antidote to staring at video screens, right? Visit Grounds for Sculpture to hear stories straight from master storytellers all day long. Stay for the day and wander the artistic grounds of this 42-acre sculpture park.
‘Heroes for Children’ Family Fun Walk (West Orange, NJ)
Join friends and family in our community to raise awareness and money for child abuse in New Jersey. This easy family fun walk at Essex County‘s South Mountain Recreation Complex is for all ages. Afterwards, everyone is welcome to explore the park’s Turtle Back Zoo.
On the Move Migration Walk (Pennington, NJ)
Discover the mystery and magic of migratory birds at Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Reserve. During the morning walk, your group will scan the skies for migratory hawks and also search the meadows for Monarch butterflies and dragonflies on their way to winter grounds.
MAM Family Art Adventure (Montclair, NJ)
On the third Saturday of each month the wonderful Montclair Art Museum opens its doors for a special family event. Kids ages 5 & up (along with an adult) can join this drop-in gallery program to explore and discuss works of art before engaging in fun activities in the outdoor sculpture garden.
Fall Family Day (Morris Plains, NJ)
Are you a member of Kids Club Thirteen? It certainly has its privileges, including free or discounted admission to 13 family events throughout the year, like today's offering at the Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms. Members can enjoy its annual Fall Family Day for free, including hayrides, live music, pumpkin carving, scavenger hunts, games and an appearance by the Cat in the Hat. The NJ State Museum is hosting its monthly story time and this one is all about Kate and her adventure of a lifetime through classic works of art. Stick around after story time for a book related craft or just to browse around the museum at your leisure.
Skylands Manor Tours (Ringwood, NJ)
If you’ve got little history or architecture buffs in the family, drop by the picturesque Skylands Manor in the NJ Botanical Gardens for a guided tour this Sunday afternoon. A Tudor Revival mansion that was constructed in the early 20th century, the home boasts antique stained glass, 16th century Bavarian pieces and a pretty impressive iron staircase. Stay after your tour and hike through one of the many trails.
