Hands-On Houston: Soap Carving
Discover how to carve a bar of soap into a reductive sculpture with current resident artist Miles Gracey!
Reductive art is a process of removing parts of a material to shape a design. As you remove parts of the soap, you will slowly reveal your design and hone your carving skills. Get ready for some good clean fun by using a variety of basic tools like paperclips, butter knives, and a spoon! Carve your rectangular bar of soap into a leaf, car, fish, or an abstract shape. Soap is an excellent material to learn how to carve with because it is soft and forgiving. When you are finished you can display your finished sculpture or use it in the bath!
Note: This activity will take place indoors and is on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last. The event is subject to change or cancellation in response to current COVID-19 conditions.
HANDS-ON HOUSTON is a free drop-in event held the first Saturday of every month. Each month, a teaching artist demonstrates a craft related to the current exhibitions. Families and children of all ages are welcome to come any time between 11 AM and 3 PM and participate in a 15 – 20-minute activity. Materials are provided. This program supports HCCC’s mission to advance education about the process, product, and history of craft. Learn more here.
