Six Perfect Picnic Places in Fairfield County

9/6/16 - By Ally Noel

The days may be getting shorter, but the cool, crisp, fresh air of fall is the perfect time to have a picnic.  If you are looking for a picturesque country setting, Fairfield County offers some wonderful locations to park your basket and unroll your blanket. Picnics are a perfect way to take advantage of a sunny day and get together with family and friends.

Some of Fairfield County’s best parks and beaches are also great places to have a picnic. Whether you are a history buff, want a little adventure, or just want to enjoy the bucolic setting of Connecticut estates and lakes, there is something on this list for you.

Weir Farm - Wilton
Get in touch with your creative side at the only National Park dedicated to American Painting.  You can tour these historic studios, or take a walk around Weir Pond. You are welcome to set your blanket up anywhere on the grounds, but remember to please clean up after yourself.

735 Nod Hill Rd, Wilton, CT 06897

Stamford Museum and Nature Center - Stamford
Bring friends and enjoy a picnic on the Meadow at Stamford Museum and Nature Center. There are plenty of picnic tables for everyone to enjoy a lovely lunch with a view.  After you are done eating, walk over 80 acres of nature trails, say hello to the animals at Heckscher Farm and burn off some energy at the playground.

39 Scofieldtown Rd, Stamford, CT 06903

Cranbury Park - Norwalk
Cranbury Park's 227 acres offers a series of wooded trails for walking, hiking, or biking. After your walk, enjoy a  family picnic on the manicured lawn of the Gallaher Estate or under the sheltered pavilion. You may also bring your own grill if you are craving a good BBQ.

300 Grumman Ave, Norwalk, CT 06851

Cherry Lawn - Darien
I have been known to enjoy a pizza picnic with friends at Cherry Lawn.  It’s playgrounds provide the perfect location to burn off a little afternoon steam. The park provides nice shaded areas and benches - plus it is also conveniently located next to the Darien Nature Center.

120 Brookside Rd, Darien, CT 06820

Lake Mohegan - Fairfield
In the summer months, this park offers a lake for swimming and a sprinkler pad that is perfect for toddlers (or anyone trying to cool off). But, the lake provides a beautiful setting for a picnic almost any time of the year. This park also has a playground, picnic shelter, and restroom faciliites.

960 Morehouse Hwy Fairfield, CT 06825

The Beach
Enjoy a meal on one of Fairfield County’s fantastic beaches. Many of these locations have picnic tables and snack bars in season; however, what is more relaxing than rolling out a blanket on the beach and watching the boats come in.  Make sure you check out this list of Five Great Connecticut Beaches before you pack your basket!
