Summer camp is definitely more challenging for parents of preschoolers.

Just when the kids have got the routine down at their “regular” school or at home, they find themselves in a new environment, doing new things. As Martha would say, that’s a good thing—although it may be hard to keep that in mind while you deal with a meltdown at first-day drop-off. That's why it's important to know your little one is under the supervision of experienced counselors who know how to work with that delightful but sometimes—ahem—difficult age group.

We've been there. To help out a fellow parent, we’ve created a list of some of the best summer camps for preschoolers around the city, and now we're zeroing in on options in the booming boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn. A trip to Broadway is always a treat, and one I can't wait to enjoy with my son—when he's a little older! Still, this is NYC, so of course there's a great show for everyone. The Broadway Playhouse, an NYC institution gently introduces kids ages 4-11 to the fun of Broadway by incorporating interactive elements into each performance, including sing-alongs, games, and even discussions with the actors.

It sounded just about right for my music-loving family, enough so that we made the trek from Brooklyn to the Upper West Side with a toddler in tow for a special kid-friendly tribute to the legendary Jazz Age songwriting duo, George and Ira Gershwin.

If you live near Boston and have curious kids, you've probably made lots of memories at the Museum of Science already. And while it would be absurd to say a life-size T-Rex and simulated lightning get old, exactly, it takes something new to galvanize us to return to Science Park on a busy weekend in wintertime. After a Saturday afternoon, I can say that the new temporary exhibit, is worth a return—or, if you have never been, a first—trip.

Monday, February 20th is Presidents' Day. And, although most children have the day off from school, many Philly parents are not so fortunate. The Northlandz train museum in Flemington had long been on my hit list of day trips to share with my boys, ages 3 and 5. After all, it's home to the world's largest model railroad. But I was a little hesitant after hearing some mixed opinions about it. Some families felt it was a gem for train lovers, while others thought the museum was outdated and pricey. When the opportunity arose to see for myself what Northlandz was all about, my family made its way to Flemington to check it out. I’m very glad we did; we had a fabulous time, and I’d definitely plan a return trip. I will say, however, that the museum may not be for everyone. Here’s what you need to know before you go.
