Weekend Fun for Westchester Kids: Disney, Science Parties, American Music, Art, Carnivals and More, June 28-29

6/26/14 - By Susan Miele

School's out for the summer, and Mommy Poppins has you covered! Our June Go List features a few fantastic events happening this last weekend in June and we've got even more great ideas below.

Westchester libraries are starting their annual Summer Reading Games to inspire kids to read throughout the summer. This year's theme—Fizz, Boom, READ!—focuses on science. The various libraries' big (FREE!) kickoff events vary throughout the week, with Summer Reading Kickoff Party and Dr. Gravity taking place this weekend. And speaking of fun and FREE library programs, there are two standout events this weekend for both kids and adults: Dan Krugman: Luthier offers an opportunity to learn about guitars from a master craftsman and The Great Library Sleepover unites the community for a ginormous slumber party!

Spend the afternoon at the American Roots Music Festival to enjoy the full span of American musical styles on tap from both well-established and up-and-coming artists. Or head to the annual Fireman's Carnival at Harbor Island Park for classic carnival fun. This is also the last weekend to catch Disney's On The Record at White Plains Performing Arts Center.

Two art events this weekend--Self-Portrait Silhouette and Family Day: Mandy Greer--The Ecstatic Moment invite visitors to be inspired by an exhibit and then create their own masterpiece.

For summertime fun in and around Westchester, look no further than our Events Calendar, where you'll find oodles of ideas—many of which are FREE. Check back often, as new events are added frequently! Plus, be sure to sign up for our weekly newsletter to keep current with weekend happenings.

OUR LATEST VIDEOS

ALL WEEKEND

Disney's On the Record - White Plains
This weekend is your last chance to catch this compilation of Disney classics. If you're hoping for sightings of Princess Jasmine, Cinderella and Snow White, you're out of luck. Instead, follow the journey of four artists, two young up-and-comers and two seasoned performers as they learn to follow their dreams and embrace change. The show is set in a recording studio and is entirely composed of song--there is no dialogue. This may make it hard for young viewers to follow the story line, however the show is fun and entertaining, the band is lively and the performers are all very talented. There's humor and heartwarming moments and you just can't help singing along. We most enjoyed the creative mash-ups of Disney tunes. $30 for adults; $25 for kids.

Fireman's Carnival - Mamaroneck
The Fireman's Carnival, a beloved annual event, kicks off this Friday in Mamaroneck's picturesque Harbor Island Park. Enjoy classic carnival rides, games, food and fun. Admission is FREE; pay per ride.

BEYOND WESTCHESTER

On Saturday, there'll be no lack of puppetry at the annual Puppetry Arts Festival of Brooklyn benefit, where you'll be entertained by puppeteers from both near and far using all kinds of puppets and marionettes. Other highlights include puppet and mask making, performances, a 15-foot T-Rex, gifts for the first 200 kids and more. Admission is FREE; activity fees vary.

Then on Sunday, go fish—for real—at the Summer on the Hudson: River Fish Celebration and enjoy live music and river-themed arts and crafts. Fishing equipment is provided, and the event is FREE! Additionally, it's always fun to see a classic movie as part of the Film Forum Jr. Sunday Matinee Series, which is tailored to families. Sunday's performance will be of a classic silent film—Safety Last—in which Harold Lloyd famously dangles from the hands of a clock atop a tall city building.
