Of course the season isn't all about stuff, it's about spending quality time together, too. So we keep filling our Holiday Fun Guides with the best ways to celebrate in NYC, Westchester, Long Island, New Jersey and Connecticut. Cool new posts this week include roundups of the best holiday light displays in Southern Westchester and Connecticut, a list of holiday train shows in Westchester and historical Christmas celebrations in New Jersey. We also added some great posts to our Holiday Gift Guide like at-home DIY presents, great new kids' and YA books and our favorite educational construction kits.

Here's what else we covered on the NYC site this week:

Pediatric ERs in NYC: Best Emergency Rooms for Kids in Manhattan

'Tis the season... for children to cut themselves on broken ornaments, burn themselves on melting candles and crash their sleds into inconveniently placed trees. (What? Just my kids?) But really, any season has the potential for injury or illness. So even though it's not something we parents like to think about, it's important to know where to find an emergency room.

But when it comes to kids, not all emergency rooms are created equal. If at all possible, it's best to bring children to a pediatric ER where the staff is specifically trained to deal with the anatomical, physiological and psychological issues unique to kids.

This being New York City where we have everything, you probably won't be surprised to hear that we've got lots of pediatric ERs throughout the five boroughs. There are so many in fact, we decided to start with a list of pediatric ERs in Manhattan. You can find our follow-up list of pediatric ERs in the outer boroughs here. Obviously, when you've got a bleeding, wheezing or otherwise in distress child on your hands, you won't have time to go online, so jot the nearest one down on your emergency contact list—and then hope you'll never need to visit.

Things to Do in Boston with Kids this Weekend: Revels, Holiday Extravaganza and More, Dec 14-15

It’s the second-to-last full weekend before Christmas (!), and the choices of things Boston families can do to celebrate this season continues to grow. One of our annual favorites, The Christmas Revels, opens this week. Other picks this weekend include the opening of Wheelock Family Theatre’s It’s a Wonderful Life, a Live Radio Play and The Heart of Robin Hood in Cambridge. Alastair Moock hosts his annual Holiday Extravaganza in Brookline, and Karen K and the Jitterbugs host a Holiday Jamboree in Natick.

Finally, our Biggest Holiday Giveaway is back! There are 12 awesome prizes - but they end one per day, so enter to win before they expire. And follow us on Facebook to learn about our flash giveaways - you never know when they will appear.

Fun & Free Things to Do This Weekend with LA Kids: Disney on Ice, Dickens Festival, and Gift of Knowledge, Dec 14 - 15

I don't mean to scare you but Christmas is in two weeks. Less maybe, depending on when you're reading this. So we're talking, what, maybe eleven shopping days? Twelve if you're lucky. And that's if you're willing to face the malls or shell out for expedited shipping.

Don't get me wrong; we can help you out. Mommy Poppins can direct you to the finest holiday cheer, all the boat parades, Santa breakfasts (what is it with the Jingle dude and breakfast? Will someone buy him dinner already!?), Nutcrackers galore (no lie, this whole post could have been filled with nothing but Nutcracker); we can point you towards the most elaborately decorated houses, and we can even tell you where to find a spare reindeer (in case yours is in the shop), but as for what you're going to place under the tree...

... well, whaddya know? Looks like we can help you with that too. Turns out we've got a few giveaways coming up, You're going to want to pay close attention, read your email and check it twice, because you do not want to miss out on the serious swag we are giving away.

In the meantime, keep reading for our favorite picks for this weekend (think of it as an early Christmas present)...

Holiday Fun this Weekend for NYC Kids: Santa Sightings, Historical Trains, Gustafer Yellowgold, Unsilent Night December 14-15

Due to the snow on Saturday, some events may be canceled or postponed. So please check the event's official website before you head out! If you decide on having a fun snow day, make sure you read our post about the best sledding hills in NYC. Have fun out there!

With snow in the forecast, NYC should look like a veritable winter wonderland this weekend and there are lots of ways to get our there and experience the season. In addition to gawking at amazing department store windows, Christmas houses and seasonal shows, you can enjoy some of our favorite annual events like taking pictures with Santa at the Winter Garden, joining the noisy Unsilent Night parade through the Village and catching one of the many kid-friendly versions of The Nutcracker dancing around town. Saturday is also the controversial SantaCon or what my son calls "drunk Santa day." Keep an eye out for marauding Kris Kringles—some are nice but many are naughty so you may want to keep your distance.

These are just a few of the great things going. All of our best bets for the weekend are below. You can find additional options in our Event Calendar and our Holiday Fun Guide. Before heading out on your adventures, be sure to download our FREE Mommy Poppins Kids on the Go app so you can find the best family destinations wherever you happen to be in NYC.
