The Ultimate Guide to Apple Parental Controls: New, Easier, Smarter, and Safer

Let me walk you through improving your child's safety online. Photo courtesy of Apple

There are probably as many opinions about screen time and kids as there are parents. You may believe in limiting screen time overall, but like to see your kids doing creative things. Or you may not have any issues with screen time, but worry about children’s safety online. We could probably argue all sides of these issues, but one thing I think most parents would agree on is that setting up parental controls, managing screen time, restricting inappropriate content, and protecting kids across all their devices feels like just another overwhelming job that we don’t have time for.

As cynical as I currently am about big tech, I recently previewed the new Apple parental controls suite and left feeling pretty strongly that every family that uses Apple products, from iPhones and iPads to Macs and Apple Watches, should take five minutes to learn about this and, at a minimum, do the one thing I’ll recommend below that will significantly improve your child’s safety online

Have You Seen the Whimsical, Kid-Designed Playground at PS 197?

Playgrounds are an important part of the fabric of NYC—and no one knows that better than the kids. That's why my daughter and I are so excited about the brand-new playground at Brooklyn's PS 197—aka her old school, Kings Highway Academy. What was once a large, gray blacktop with a small, faded jungle gym in one corner has had new life breathed into it with a much-needed upgrade that's colorful, varied, and, endearingly, designed by the kids of PS 197.

With these improvements, I could easily classify it as one of NYC's best playgrounds. Gone are the days my daughter and her classmates endured of having to make up games to play in the wide empty space, or hiding fence posts during attempted games of hide and seek. This bright new spot is a perfect place for a midday escape, and even better: Outside of school hours, it's open to the public.
