Weekly Wrap Up: Free Halloween Fun, Kids' Day at New York Comic Con, Haunted Pumpkin Garden

10/13/11 - By Raven Snook

Don't be surprised if every single person you see this weekend is in costume. In addition to the numerous Halloween happenings taking place all over NYC, including lots of free festivals, the sixth annual Comic Con at the Javits Center is sure to attract lots of cosplayers (that's geek talk for adults in costume).

This week, we continued our series of posts on Chinatown with a profile of the fabulous Hester Street Playground. We also brought back our Notable News posts, in which we link to articles and items that pique our interest. This edition's got info on families who've joined the Occupy Wall Street ranks and other stories.

And that's just a bit of what's going on. Here's what we covered this week on Mommy Poppins in NYC, New Jersey, Long Island and Connecticut, as well as selected stories from our brand-new sites in Boston and Los Angeles.

OUR LATEST VIDEOS

New York City

We started the week with a real treat for readers: 31 free Halloween events in NYC.

We continued our Halloween coverage with an awesome slide show of the Haunted Pumpkin Garden at the New York Botanical Garden.

New York Comic Con offers more costumed fun, as well as a slew of programming for families on Sunday's Kids' Day.

Let's hope Indian Summer returns this weekend so you can check out the Destination Playground on Hester Street.

Looking for a culture fix? During the weekend-long OpenHouseNY, families can take tours of iconic, historic and even some private buildings and institutions.

Or maybe you prefer to take in a show. We just loved
Atlantic for Kids' hilarious musical The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs.

Our links roundup included info on checking out e-books at the library, a new petition against standardized testing, and parents and kids at OWS.

Best bets for the weekend include lots of Halloween fetes, the Big Draw and Comic Con.

New Jersey

Our friends across the Hudson got to check out two new, super-cool attractions: Liberty Science Center's carnival-themed Math Midway and the elevated Treetop Adventure Course at Turtle Back Zoo. (I see a trip to NJ in my family's future.)

Here's some seasonal fun you can only do outside the city: Halloween train rides. There are five in NJ.

Weekend highlights include National Grouch Day Storytime in Deptford, a Howl and Hike in Ledgewood and the Sussex County Harvest Festival.

Long Island

On the isle, we have a roundup of the ten best Halloween events for families.

Things to do this weekend include the Huntington Historical Society Apple Festival and the Hey Ya Brothers Variety Show in Great Neck. (I've seen these guys in NYC. They're hilarious.)

Connecticut

Take a fearsome (or just fun) Halloween train ride in CT.

There's also a spooky roundup of real CT ghost stories.

We're glad winter is still a month off since there are so many wonderful parks to visit and harvest festivals to attend.

Weekend events include the annual Witches Dungeon Halloween Classic Movies in Bristol, pick your own pumpkin patch in Fairfield and Fairview Tree Farm Haunted Hay Rides in Shelton.

Los Angeles & Boston

The Halloween hoopla has also hit Boston, where we've got a roundup of places to pick your own pumpkin and a list of haunted houses.

Meanwhile LA profiles two spooky attractions: the Spider Pavilion and the movie Flying Monsters in 3-D.
