Things to Do on Christmas Day in the Hartford Area
While many families spend Christmas Day making obligatory trips to the relatives, plenty of others may not have family nearby, do not celebrate Christmas, or may simply need an escape from crazy Aunt Brenda. If you fall into any of the latter camps, read on for some ideas on ways to spend Christmas day out of your house in the Hartford area.
Go to the Movies
Many families make it a holiday tradition to see a movie on Christmas Day. The Peanuts Movie and The Good Dinosaur are good options for young kids. Check individual cinema websites for show times.
Winterfest 2015 at Bushnell Park
Skate for free at the Winterfest Ice Rink on the east side of Bushnell Park near the Pump House Gallery and enjoy the park decked out for the holiday. Skating is open from noon-4 pm. The Carousel is also open for rides from 11 am-5 pm.
Drive-through Light Display
Once the sun sets, head over to Goodwin Park in Hartford for their Holiday Light Fantasia. Pass 2-miles of whimsical light displays that celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year’s Day, and Three Kings Day.
In Meriden, Hubbard Park has its own spectacular Festival of Silver Lights with 200,000 white lights and more than 300 lighted characters along the drive.
Visit a Nursing Home
Many nursing home residents do not have family to visit or take them out on Christmas Day. Spread a little cheer by bringing holiday cards or simply taking the time to sit and spend time with them. Jerome Home in New Britain, Hughes Health and Rehabilitation, and Vernon Manor Health Care Center are ones to try (always call first).
Head to the Center and enjoy the quiet sidewalks and window displays decked out for Christmas. When you are hungry, choose from three great restaurants open on Christmas day — Blue Elephant Trail (Thai), Ichiro Hibachi and Sushi, and Shish Kebab House of Afghanistan.
