10 Kid-Friendly Happy Hours in Silver Lake and Los Feliz

Submitted by Jennifer Cook Nice on Wed, 06/03/2015 - 6:51am

Man, do I miss the spur-of-the-moment, after-work, happy hour drop in. What joy was had from discounted drinks and finger foods that involved no cooking or washing dishes when finished. In my hunt for ways to revive my pre-kid life that was—at times so spontaneous and uncomplicated—I found that I can still work in an occasional happy hour weeknight... with kids!

The happy hour concept is generally associated with a younger, rowdier crowd that does not want to wait for the weekend to have drinks with friends. Why should anyone wait? Happy hour can mean more than just cheap booze; it also offers a bargain menu of small portions of food that may be the perfect-size meal for little ones. Why not include your family in the pre-dinner hour fun, which often commences early enough for an after-school special? To that end, we present the sequel to Mommy Poppins' Westside Happy Hours post: Silver Lake joints for snacks and drinks that aren't just for the over-21 crowd.

10 Kids Furniture Stores in and Around Los Angeles

Submitted by Jennifer Cook Nice on Tue, 11/18/2014 - 1:44pm

Furniture shopping for little ones changes as quickly as they do: one day it concerns cribs and changing tables, and the next moment it’s bunk beds and desks for homework. And while some kids' items are so fleeting that we don't want to spend much on them (thank goodness for the Toy District!), there are always a couple of furniture pieces that we really want to get right. Looking for the perfect crib, a bed to make the room, or a desk to inspire ultimate focus? Below we offer a list of creative suggestions to shop for kids' furniture in Los Angeles. From stylish to efficient, there’s a furniture store in the vast city of Los Angeles to meet everyone's needs.

5 Music Classes for Kids In and Around Downtown Los Angeles

Submitted by Jennifer Cook Nice on Fri, 08/22/2014 - 5:40am

Most of us have heard something to the tune (no pun intended) of research showing that music is to the brain what physical exercise is to the body. With that in mind, it doesn’t hurt to know some local music class options for your little ones. I know my child loves music, and although old school rhetoric mentions kids should not start formal lessons in music until the age of five, one has to admit, classes are a great way to nurture children and prepare them to share and learn in a class setting at any age. Here’s a quick list of music classes available for families in and around Downtown Los Angeles.

Downtown LA's Toy District: A Treasure Hunt for Birthday Supplies

Submitted by Jennifer Cook Nice on Tue, 07/22/2014 - 4:12am

It just so happens my child's birthday is coming up soon. I had heard interesting things about the Toy District and deals one can get there on birthday supplies, so I decided to take advantage of living near Downtown and go for a stroll through LA's well known Toy District -- located just east of S. Los Angeles Street, between 3rd St and 4th St. in downtown Los Angeles. Is it a must-stop for party shopping? And is it worth the effort?

Submitted by Jennifer Cook Nice on Tue, 04/22/2014 - 2:20pm

With summer right around the corner, parents have a lot of planning on their plates to ensure a fun-filled time away from school. There are many overnight camp choices for kids without dietary restrictions, but let's face it: for those who do have dietary concerns - gluten-free, peanut-free, vegan, or other needs - the list is not as long. For those moms and dads who want overnight camps as a potential activity for their kids this summer, here's a list to consider, especially if diet is a concern.
