It's been a quiet week on all the Mommy Poppins sites as we spend quality time with our kids over spring break. I can't say it's been mellow though—my daughter and I have been running all over town trying to pack as much fun as possible into our NYC staycation! So far we've gone on the hunt for giant Fabergé designer eggs, strolled a section of the High Line (where a musician mistook us for tourists!), gawked at outrageous costume jewelry and 3D printing at the Museum of Arts and Design, saw Atlantic for Kids' fabulous new musical Mr. Chickee's Funny Money, played with snow (yes it really snowed on Tuesday) and romped at our favorite neighborhood playground. And we still have five days left to go, only Sunday is spoken for since we never miss the awesome Easter Bonnet Parade.

Easter of course is the big event this weekend and egg hunts abound in NYC and beyond. If you're looking for a quick seasonal getaway, consider going on an egg hunt and then hitting a Destination Playground on Long Island, taking a train ride with the Easter Bunny in New Jersey, or picking your own fruits and veggies in Westchester.

Spring is truly here! As Spring Break winds down, this is a fantastic weekend to get outside, explore the reawakening world and celebrate the return of long warm days.The forsythia are bursting into bloom, pollen is floating through the air and bunnies are laying eggs all across Westchester County. 

For children and families who are celebrating Easter on Sunday, this weekend is packed with opportunities to hunt for eggs, hide eggs and pose for a photo with the Easter Bunny.

In addition to Easter activities, Earth Day celebrations are getting under way in Ossining and Yorktown while nature centers across the county are helping people learn about the ways in which animals, birds and bugs greet the spring.

The Easter Bunny kicks into high gear this weekend, bringing eggs to Cambridge, Stoneham, Roslindale, and Boston. With so many eggs hidden in the Greater Boston area, kids will be hard pressed not to find at least one!  Parents who are feeling nostalgic can bring their kids to the Brattle Theater for double features of classic anime (Spirited Away and My Neighbor Tortoro) or Jim Henson Fantasy (Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal). And for those who seek a more hands-on fantastical experience, visit the fairy gardens at Roger Williams Park Botanical Center. There’s just something about the idea of fairies that captures the imaginations of kids and adults alike. This spring, there are plenty of opportunities to see and make whimsical elf homes, fairy gardens, and troll villages for the magical woodland creatures that only live in our imaginations (or do they actually exist?). After you see the fairy gardens in Providence or build houses for fairies in the woods, you might even be inspired to make your own fairy or dragon garden at home.  Then check back here at the start of summer for more fairy festivities happening throughout New England during the summer and fall months.

The kids may be on spring break but the school news never stops. As we teased in our end-of-the-week wrap up last Friday, the Department of Education has announced changes to its grade promotion policies and the New York State Education Department has canceled its contract with the controversial inBloom. But there's even more school news afoot, including updates on Gifted & Talented admissions and an extension for pre-K applications.
