Migis Lodge on Sebago Lake: Lakeside Luxury in Maine

7/27/13 - By Anna Fader

I love summer camp. And, now that I'm all grown up, one of my favorite ways to getaway with my family is to go to a family camp so that I can experience all that summer fun with my own kids. We've spent fun long weekends at Club Getaway which offers tons of activities that grow-ups don't usually get to do once they outgrow the camp bunk. We were invited to visit Migis Lodge, a family camp in Southern Maine that is completely different, so we jumped in our loaner 2014 Subaru Forester (more on that later) to go check it out.

OUR LATEST VIDEOS

A trip to Migis Lodge is like stepping into a Ralph Lauren ad where life is beautiful, refined and time is spent in quiet pastimes on the lake. The pace of life at Migis is slow. The day starts with the smack of a paper dropped on your cabin porch and a sleepy stroll to the dining room for breakfast. A buffet of fresh fruit, cereals, bacon and potatoes is available as well as an omelet station or order off the menu for French Toast, Eggs Benedict and pancakes. Enjoy your coffee from a hand made Migis mug and gaze out as you begin to formulate what activities you might pursue that day. Perhaps, reading by the lake, tennis, fishing, swimming, paddle boarding, sailing, canoeing or kayaking.

Children ages 5 and up will want to join the kids camp for different activities every day from 12-5 so they can play with other kids, do crafts, play games and go on adventures—like a Thursday cruise across the lake to a candy store. Private babysitting can be arranged during other hours or for younger children.

The most popular activities at Migis are the motor boat sport: water skiing, wakeboarding and kneeboarding, which must be signed up for 45 minutes beforehand. This act of forethought may be the most exertion you will make during your entire trip. Although choosing from the 6 course dinner menu can also be a challenge.

Dinner is an elegant affair, starting with drinks on the front porch. The menu is different each night, but always includes a fresh made bread, relish, a hot or cold soup, a choice of salads, entree, and sides. Lobster and a roast meat are always available from the carving station. Highlights of my meals were a cold cherry soup, roasted quail, fresh popovers, and I had delicious salads both nights.

Migis has had the same chef for 30 years and there's no need to change. The food was some of the best resort food I have eaten. However, I think the pastries and dessert stand out even more. A s'mores dessert consisting of a marshmallow meringue, chocolate mousse and graham cracker cake was to die for and talked about for many days afterward. Even the simple berries were served with an incredible lemon cream. And my son couldn't stop eating the mini croissants served at breakfast.

Children 10 and up may eat in the main dining hall or they can join the other children and eat on the kids porch where they are offered a diverse and sensible kid friendly menu which included the typical burgers and pasta, but also scrambled eggs and always a vegetable on the side as well as a small dessert. Families with children under 10 can also eat together in the family dining room. After children eat they can stay in the "Zoo" program until 9pm so parents can enjoy a relaxed dinner, dessert and maybe even some drinks.

Most days there is some type of cookout offered for one meal, whether it's a cruise to the Migis private island for a cookout, a bonfire and s'mores, or a lobster bake dinner. Mind you, when they say cookout at Migis, what they mean is a cruise in a vintage motorboat to a private island where you'll be offered filet mignon in addition to chicken, burgers, hot dogs, and veggie burgers as well as corn on the cob, a variety of salads, watermelon and desserts.

Some nights there is an evening activity like BINGO. Other nights, it's enough to sit by a fire, gaze out on the lake or just enjoy the quiet. There are board games in the main lodge and cable TVs in the cabins for quiet family fun.

Migis has about 30 cabins on 135 acres ranging from single lodge rooms to lake houses with multiple bedrooms and bathrooms. The cabins are upscale cabin style with comfortable beds, stone fireplaces (cabin boys build your fire every morning for you and they are match-ready), and ample bathrooms. Our cabin was cozy and had a nice view of the lake from the rocking chair porch or the picture window.

Cell phone use is discouraged around camp and forbidden in the dining room, but the otherwise old-school resort accommodates those who need to stay in touch with wifi throughout the property as well as cell signal.

The staff is incredibly friendly and accommodating from the cabin boys who cart your luggage to your cabin in wheelbarrows to the chatting wait staff in the dining room. Throughout our stay, the staff made an effort to accommodate any special requests we made.

Migis is not an action packed vacation and most of the activities are centered around the lake. The weather can be fairly unpredictable in Maine, even in July. August is the safest time to enjoy good weather. One day of our trip in July was in the low seventies and rainy. Kids may not mind water sports in colder temperatures and they can also enjoy activities in the kids club. There are always board games in the lodge, but otherwise, if the weather is foul, be prepared to just  relax. But isn't that the point?

The trip from Sebago Lake back to NYC is long. Google clocks it at 6 hours, but we all know that with traffic that could easily be 8. By the time I left Migis Lodge I was so relaxed I didn't want to spoil it with a stressful drive home through stop and go highway traffic. I mentioned before that we had a loaner 2014 Subaru Forester. Well this is where the hi-tech safety features of the new Forester really shine. With the new fangled adaptive cruise control, which automatically adjusts your speed if the car ahead of you slows down or speeds up, driving in less than stellar traffic is not only safer, but much less work than in a regular car and I got home feeling just as relaxed as I did when I left Migis Lodge. Thanks for giving me the perfect ride to get to and from Migis Lodge, Subaru.

Migis Lodge on Sabago Lake is not a budget vacation. For my family of four to stay in a studio cottage in the early summer would be  $774 per night. Of course, the quality of this vacation isn't cut rate either. Great food, a beautiful, serene setting and lots of quiet enjoyment on a gorgeous lake may be worth a splurge. Find out more about Migis Lodge at migis.com.
