Musical Theater Classes for Long Island Kids

Broadway babies aren’t born; they’re made—and trained by theater professionals in acting, singing, and dancing. If your child knows the Annie soundtrack by heart, help her exercise her musical theater chops at any of the following Long Island theater companies, many of which boast instructors hailing from the Great White Way themselves. Classes, which are divided by age, start as young as four years and go up to eighth grade. CM Little Kids focuses on theatrical play, CM Kids provides an introduction to musical theater, and CM Juniors offers in-depth training in acting, dance and music. In December, Kids & Junior classes present a production of Disney’s Cinderella Kids.

A new offering this season, musical theater classes are available in four levels of study, each culminating in studio and main stage performances. Level I Discovery teaches the basics in theatrical game play, while Level II Development explores acting, singing and dancing, and introduces students to solo work. Level III Performance focuses on partner and small-group scene work, and Level IV Masters is aimed at the child who wishes to pursue acting as a full-time career.

Aged-graded classes are structured as actual Broadway musicals, from the first audition-style class to a fully staged theater performance. Students learn stage craft, theater etiquette, dialogue, songs, staging, choreography and characterization. Productions of Annie, Cinderella and Oliver! are presented in January.
