So…you’re thinking of moving to the New York City suburbs and you keep hearing about Fairfield County, CT.  Great!  We look forward to welcoming you here.  But which town, you ask, would best suit your lifestyle? 

There are a lot of factors to consider, especially if you desire a town that is easily commutable to NYC.  Eight years ago my husband and I debated these issues for months.  After many glasses of wine, several arguments, and some hand wringing, we packed up our things and moved from Boston to Fairfield County with our then 1 year old.  While we were apprehensive about moving to such an affluent county, we have been tremendously happy with the many wonderful people we've met, the ease with which we can get into Manhattan, and the incredible (free!) education our children are getting.

We're spending a lot of time inside these days visiting some of our favorite indoor spots, from museums to play spaces to fun stores where kids can run around. We've also been taking a lot of classes, which is why we're thrilled to offer our readers deep discounts to ten NYC programs we love.

Of course we have spent some time outside, too. As you can see from the photo above, last Saturday my daughter and her friends had a blast ice-skating at Lasker Rink. (That said, we spent brutally cold Sunday holed up in the Children's Museum of the Arts, which was a madhouse!)

it’s all about animals this weekend!

Dragons put in an appearance, as celebrations of the Chinese New Year begin. Events like The Monkey KIng puppet show at the Peabody Museum, a Chinese New Year celebration at the Harvard Museum of Natural History, and a book launch of Dumpling Days at Porter Square Books help welcome in the Year of the Dragon. Clifford, the Big Red Dog (in costume character form) visits the Harvard Coop for Kids, Rainforest Reptiles slither and crawl to the Children’s Museum, and birds of prey swoop in on the Ipswich River Sanctuary. Even though we're back to a regular two-day weekend, there are enough cool activities to fill many more days. The Kids Food Festival serves up culinary fun in Bryant Park. The Bronx's beautiful Wave Hill celebrates the season with its weekend-long Hibernators Pajama Pop-In. And families can catch new puppet shows in Brooklyn and Manhattan, including the debut of the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre's Little Miss Muffet’s Monster Sitting Service.

Tweens and teens can get creative at the third annual Brooklyn Inventgenuity Festival and kids of all ages will enjoy celebrating Chinese New Year (the Year of the Dragon officially begins on Monday).
