Long Island Summer Day Camps Open Houses

If you're like me, you want to enroll your child in day camp this summer, but it's only February, and you're quite frankly just focused on school lunch and afterschool activities and everything else going on in the here and now. And meanwhile, you're learning that camps have started their open houses in January and are filling up and all of your kids' friends are already enrolled for the summer. Worry not! Summer camps across the Island are still holding open houses. Below, a sampling; and check out our Camps Guide for all the information you need for selecting a Long Island day camp. 

Long Island Kids' Activities Martin Luther King Weekend January 19, 20, and 21: MLK Commemorative Events & the Colors of Winter

It's a three-day weekend, and there's lots going on to keep the kids busy. There are several shows to see this weekend, including Gustafer Yellowgold at the Goat on a Boat Puppet Theatre, Pinkalicious the Musical at the CM Performing Center in Oakdale, Raggedy Ann and Andy at Theatre Three in Port Jefferson, Sleeping Beauty at the Studio Theatre in Lindenhurst, and The Magic of Thaddeus at Dix Hills Performing Art Center. If nature's more your thing, check out "The Colors of Winter" at the Sherwood-Jayne Farm in Setauket, Winter Animal Tracks at the West Hills County Park, terrarium making at the Suffolk County Farm and Education Center, or the Cold Spring Fish Hatchery. There are also several events commemorating Dr. King in honor of the holiday. Long Island Kids' Activities January 12 and 13: Jack Hanna's Into the Wild, Shabbat Stop, and Flying Model Competition

Jack Hanna's in town this weekend (LOVE that guy!) at the NYCB Theatre at Westbury. Also going on: A fun family day at the Sid Jacobson JCC called Shabbat Stop, including a concert from Mama Doni, Disney on Ice at the Nassau Coliseum, a Family Adventure at the Connetquot River State Park Preserve, and a fun Flying Model competition at the Cradle of Aviation Museum. Long Island Kids' Activities January 5 and 6: "Simple Gifts," "Blue's Clues Live," and Trout Birthday Party

Happy New Year! As we settle back in to life as usual following the holidays, kids (and parents) may experience a small let-down. Never fear, there are plenty of activities going on around the Island to keep the kids entertained and spirits up. There's a beautiful marionette show at the Tilles Center, a few nature activities at a couple of state parks in Suffolk County, and a trout birthday party at the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery. Long Island Kids' Activities December 29 and 30: Kwanzaa Celebration, New Year's Eve Celebrations, and the Silly Dilly Band

Hope your holidays are going well! You'll be able to keep the holiday celebrations going this weekend with a Kwanzaa celebration at the African-American Musuem of Art, New Year's Eve celebrations (be sure to check out our listing of New Year's Eve Celebrations for families, the Silly Dilly Band at the Long Island Children's Museum. Long Island Kids' Activities December 22 and 23: The Nutcracker, Gingerbread Decorating, and Miracle on 34th Street the Musical

It's the weekend before Christmas! If you celebrate, no doubt you've got lots of last-minute shopping to do. But the kiddies still need to be entertained. We've got you covered. Santa's at the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery again, there's a great production of the Nutcracker at the LIU Tilles Center, the Cupcake Corner in Garden City's got gingerbread decorating, Take One Theatre has a couple of holiday productions this weekend, and the there's Family Sundays once again at the Nassau County Museum of Art. Long Island Kids' Activities December 15 and 16: "Shrek the Musical," Breakfast with Santa, and "If You Really Love Polar Bears"

This weekend we got your holiday celebrations still going strong, as well as some secular fun. Shrek the Musical is playing at LIU Tilles Center in Greenvale, there's an adorable production at the Nassau County Museum of Art called "If You Really Love Polar Bears," kids can have breakfast with Santa at Cupcake Corner in Garden City, and of course, it wouldn't be the holidays without a production of The Nutcracker, by the Lynch Ballet Company at the Huntington High School auditorium.

Long Island Kids' Activities December 8 and 9: Hanukkah Festivities Galore, the Vienna Boys Choir, and the Nutcracker

Hanukkah starts this weekend, and Long Island is in full celebration! You'll find menorah lightings all over town, menorah parades, and parties, parties, parties: There's a Chanukah Wonderland in Merrick, a Chanukah Spectacular in Plainview, and the Hanukkah Happening in Huntington, just to name a few. Check out our guide to the Island's Hanukkah happenings for even more lighting events and celebrations. There are also a few Nutcracker productions this weekend, and the Vienna Boys Choir is performing in Westhampton. What a festive weekend!
