Weekly Wrap Up Holiday Break Special: Things to Do in NYC, Festive Day Trips, Christmas Eve and Day Activities

As you can tell from the photo, we were foolhardy enough to venture over to Rockefeller Center last weekend. We saw the tree—for about two seconds before the crowd pushed us on. We also hit the Lego Store—and then had to flee due to claustrophobia. Dealing with the massive crowds just reinforced how much we love being New Yorkers: Other people just visit, we live here. We can see Rock Center anytime! (But never again around the holidays. Yikes).

This week we expanded our already chock-full Holiday Guide with posts about cool things to do over holiday break, and family fun on Christmas Eve and Day. We also included an inspiring video about our wonderful world in our final 2011 biweekly news roundup.

And that's just a bit of what's going on. Here's what we covered this week on Mommy Poppins in NYC, New Jersey, Long Island and Connecticut, as well as selected stories from our sites in Boston and Los Angeles. Wishing you a very happy holiday season from all of us at Mommy Poppins.

Fun & Free Things to Do Christmas Weekend with LA Kids

Congratulations, folks; we've made it. We've spent weeks preparing, planning, shopping, making our lists and checking them twice, posing for holiday pictures and sending missives to our entire address book, and finally our hard work has paid off. The holidays have arrived.

No doubt many of you plan to spend Christmas Day home with friends and family. For those of you looking for activities outside the home, good news: we're here to help. First up, we offer 10 Things to Do on Christmas Day. And if your kitchen closes on Christmas Day, we present a list of Restaurants that are Open.

For holiday cheer that continues on into next week, might we suggest some of LA's finest Christmas Light Displays (and, if you're willing to hop on the freeway, More Christmas Light Displays outside of Los Angeles).

Take a break from wrapping (or unwrapping) your presents, and continue reading for some of our favorite picks for this holiday weekend.

Things To Do in Boston with Kids on Christmas Day - Walking through History

With the shopping done, gifts wrapped, and house ready for guests, Christmas Day is a welcome break from the last-minute rush and chaos of the season. While most stores, museums, and other attractions in Boston are closed on Christmas Day (thank the Blue Laws in part for that), families can get out and explore the city via several self-guided tours: the Freedom Trail, the Boston HarborWalk, and the Walk to the Sea. Of course, there's nothing to say families can't explore the city throughout the year using these walks as a guide!

Please read on for details, and all our best for a safe and joyful holiday.

A Way to Give Back: Children’s Hospital of New Jersey’s “Wish List”

This is a time of year when we can be feeling a strong desire to “give back” and yet be overwhelmed by the amount of needs out there. We participate in toy drives, help out at shelters, donate our time and money, hoping that what we give can make a difference. Today we’d like to highlight one way of giving back that really does make a difference, The Children’s Hospital of NJ’s “Wish List”.

Things to Do for Kids and Families on Long Island December 24 and 25: Skate with Santa, Christmas Shows, & Hanukkah Celebrations

Christmas weekend is finally here! While many will probably be caught up doing last-minute shopping and celebrating the holiday with family, of course, not everyone celebrates Christmas, and even those who do might be looking to get the kids out of the house for a few hours. Don't worry: The Island doesn't shut down for Christmas. We've found lots of activities going on for you and your family.

Notable News: Governors Island Revamp, Controversial School Decisions and Proof the World Really is Beautiful

We're taking a break from the holiday rush to share a few non-seasonal stories that have intrigued us over the past few weeks.

This edition of our Notable News roundup features articles about schools, changes to Governors Island and a new Laurie Berkner e-book, and ends with a video so wonderful, it could make Scrooge himself smile. (Because really, we're kind of Scrooge-like right about now...and yet we grinned.)
