Playgrounds may be as much a part of childhood as potty training and the tooth fairy, but to city families, having a go-to playground is a real sanity saver. So, it's been one long spring, with playgrounds padlocked and off-limits to the public. But, the end is in sight, with Mayor Bill de Blasio giving the green light to reopen playgrounds to the public when NYC enters Phase 2 of reopening Monday, June 22.
Weary parents and cooped up kids met the news with joy, because, as we all know, when you live in a tiny apartment, the neighborhood park is your backyard.
To celebrate the occasion, we're bringing you this list of the 18 best playgrounds across the five boroughs. It's our NYC playground hall of fame. These NYC playgrounds offer wide-open spaces, with plenty of room to romp tons of outdoor entertainment.
In a sign of the times, visitors may be greeted by new social distancing ambassadors, who will distribute free face masks, and remind park patrons to practice social distancing and good hygiene. So, pack a hefty supply of wipes and some hand sanitizer before you head out. If these spots are too far from your home base, we've got profiles of plenty of great local parks citywide in our Parks and Playgrounds Guide for NYC Kids.
