Sure, the waters surrounding Houston may not be the clearest, but there is still something magical about being among the waves. I've always considered myself lucky to live in a city near the sea; as a kid, we would often take boat rides around Galveston, and I wish we knew back then about boating opportunities within Houston's city limits. Boat rides make for great activities for any season, from spring to summer to fall. These six options are all family friendly and include both free and ticketed rides.
One of the many great things about living in the greater Houston area is that we are surrounded by small towns and communities full of history, attractions, and fun things to do. Tomball is northwest of Houston and can be accessed from Highway 249, and is the perfect spot for a morning or day out with the kids. If you're looking for more north Houston fun, check out our list of things to do in The Woodlands with kids.
Mini golf is a staple in most families' rotation of fun weekend activities, but in Houston, standing in the heat for an hour putting around a small plastic ball isn't always...a ball. Blacklight mini golf, on the other hand, combines the game with lovely air conditioning and lots of glow-in-the-dark fun. Pool parties reign supreme in Houston because, let's face it, we have pool weather all year long. While there are some great pools around Houston for indoor pool parties, nothing beats a morning or afternoon in the sun with your best friends, a bottle of sunscreen, and a picnic basket. All of these options have fees associated with them, but we also have recommendations for some of the city's best FREE swimming pools where you can call the city of Houston for reservation details. My family recently made our first visit to the Mile High City, and I was honestly surprised by just how much we enjoyed the trip. As a native southern Texan, I mainly envisioned Colorado as one giant mountain, where hiking was everyone's only amusement. Ironically, Denver is mostly flat and is surrounded by the beautiful Rocky Mountains, which makes you feel like you're standing in the middle of a Bob Ross painting.
Denver offers so much more than hiking—with big city attractions that range from museums and animal sanctuaries to quirky restaurants. There are even hot air balloon rides! Read on for 25 things to do with kids of all ages.
If you've got an 8-12-year-old interested in STEM or movie-making, hurry up and run to the nearest computer; Apple has just opened registration for its free three-day camps. Located at different Apple store locations in the Houston area, these camps won't last long and are 100 percent free, so we wanted you to be the first to know!
It's no secret today's kids love video games. It's this universal truth that makes laser tag such an appealing activity for kids and adults - it gets you moving (like, really moving), and simulates on-screen experiences in real time. There are some great options in Houston where kids, both young and old, can play this high-energy game.
